Don't know how to structure a speech?

[Douglas Kruger] Ever sat staring at a computer screen, agonising over how to structure that crucial presentation? The future of humanity depends upon it, and so far, you have a blinking cursor... ...And a note to pick up some chicken spice. For those difficult days when your mind is on the fritz, here's a 'copy and paste' selection of structures that you can simply choose and use.

The silence on COP17 and its unintended lesson for South Africans

[Herman Manson: @marklives] South Africans have an extraordinary social conscience, says Thomas Kolster, the Danish communications consultant and author of the soon-to-be released book The Bible of Goodvertising (from Thames & Hudson) who is visiting South Africa in the run-up to the COP17/CMP7 conference being held in Durban, 28 November - 9 December 2011. Which is why the lack of public debate on and interest in COP17 here is so surprising to him.

Should SA bid for hosting 2020 Olympic Games?

[Dr Nikolaus Eberl] As Cabinet is about to announce the decision whether or not to bid for hosting the 2020 Olympic Summer Games, the big question remains whether the country will be able to produce a return on investment that will justify the financial outlay required for staging the world's second biggest sporting event.

Good wi-fi maketh the conference, bad wi-fi breaketh it

[Henk Kleynhans] Despite wi-fi being a relatively minor service in the grander scheme of a conference, where you may have excellent speakers, interaction and workshops, bad wi-fi has the power to make a good conference look really bad and poorly organised. And when the wi-fi doesn't work, negative tweets about the conference abound.

Farenheit 2010: The inconvenient truth behind SA's new world cup stadiums

[Kevin Bloom] Craig Tanner's documentary Farenheit 2010 interrogates the needless expenditure behind South Africa's brand-new stadiums, and argues that the 2010 FIFA World Cup could have (and should have) been staged in the venues that were in existence when we won the bid. Do our own broadcasters care? Not really.

Your conference sucks: Part 3

[Richard Mulholland] Surprisingly, considering the time and effort that goes into everything else, a conference really is just a series of sequential presentations designed to fulfil a specific objective (read parts one and two). Now as nerdy as that sounds, it's the truth. So in this, the third and final article in the "your conference sucks" series, I'm going to focus on the sad bastard that is "the PowerPoint presentation".

[2010 trends] Positive outlook for meetings, events industry

[Karen Ashwin] I'm a firm believer that, due to the dynamics of global economic shift we've experienced, the way we live, work and run our businesses has changed irrevocably - life will truly never be the same again! This holds true for the South African meetings and events industry in 2010.

Coming up for air
[Abey Mokgwatsane] I feel like I’ve just come up for air! Maybe that’s just a big city thing – whenever you ask a fellow Joburger how they are, the standard response is: “Fine, thanks, just very busy.” Anyhow, I really mean it.

Your conference sucks: Part 1

[Richard Mulholland] I'm often asked what the difference is between a small business owner and an entrepreneur. To me it's simple - small business owners are driven by love and/or expertise in their chosen field; entrepreneurs look at that field from the outside and say, "This sucks; I think I can do it better." I'm an entrepreneur in the presentation and conference space, and I can safely say that it sucks.
