[2012 trends] Focused, proactive, involved healthcare

[Shelley Harris] Healthcare is a subject that's close to everyone's heart, and both the healthcare sector and consumers alike are always alert to new developments and trends. In recent years, these have included a greater focus on the impact of non-communicable diseases, as well as a clear indication that patients across the board want to be more involved in their treatment.

With the revamp of health services in the country, it is my sincere hope that clinical genetic services are finally included. It is a disgrace that there are currently no posts for genetic counsellors and clinicians IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY.

Leonard Erasmus commented on Experts welcome salt cut
Researchers from the University of Leuven in Belgium tracked 3,861 people 60 years old and younger for a median of nearly 8 years, and found absolutely no link at all between sodium and blood pressure levels.

Repeat: No link at all between sodium and blood pressure levels.

Overall, they found a 4.1 percent rate of death from heart-related conditions among those with the lowest intake, 1.9 percent among those with moderate intake, and 0.8 percent among those with the highest.

That means patients with the lowest salt intakes were more than five times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those with the highest, according to the new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Also, researchers examined the records of more than 5,200 Dutch men and women over the age of 55, and found that about 8 percent of them had low sodium levels.

These seniors who were low in sodium — no doubt dutifully obeying their doctor’s orders — had a 61 percent increased risk of spinal fracture, a 39 percent increased risk of non-spinal fracture, and a 21 percent increase in the risk of dying during the six-year study period.

Even worse, these weren’t patients with dramatically deficient levels of sodium — they were just a little on the low side. The researchers called it “mild” hyponatremia during their presentation at the American Society of Nephrology’s annual meeting.

And if that’s what “mild” hyponatremia will do to you, imagine the damage that could accompany the strict low-salt diet pushed by so many doctors.
