The FIFA media and communications team, based in Zurich, Switzerland, and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, presented to the media, host cities and other marketing partners in Johannesburg last week at the first of a series of media information days. The scale of the event is unlike any other sporting event ever held in South Africa and I would venture to say that there has never been any other comparative event of this scale on SA soil. For those of us in the media who covered South Africa’s historic first democratic elections in 1994, we may have an inkling of the sheer size and scope of this event, although in a completely different context of course. Here’s some basic numbers: 43 600 hours dedicated broadcast coverage to 26.3 billion global viewers, across 376 channels for whole tournament, and 55 000 is the number of rooms will be needed in SA. Germany had incredible success with promoting national unity and building the country brand and South Africa has the same opportunity. The one difficulty is of course that the event in SA will be held in winter – and at night – because of time difference issues to ensure the global TV audience. So don’t be seduced by those amazing images showing the German spirit and glorious fan fest activity in the sunshine; our job is a little harder. The dates to diarise now are: 11 June to 11 July 2010 and it is obvious from the various marketing, legal and media workshops that I’ve attended to date, that we all, individually and through our businesses, have such an important role to play in ensuring that South Africa The Brand and Africa The Continent are the real winners in the end of this sporting contest that has socio-economic implications for so many nations.

    Reading the fine print
[Terry Levin] Whether remembering the banning of newspapers such as New Nation and South, being detained in Pollsmoor by the security police, drawing up the 1994 election “how to” posters or being served a bouquet of multi-million rand lawsuits by Jacob Zuma, Jonathan Zapiro has graphically embodied the essence of truth, freedom and a good laugh. Well deservedly garnering one of the biggest ovations of the conference, cartoonist Zapiro was the opening speaker on the last day of the 10th Design Indaba, Friday, 23 February 2007.

FIFA gives media the game plan for 2010
[Louise Marsland] Ticketing allocation will probably be the biggest headache for FIFA and the LOC, which is why the Fan Fests – areas where fans could gather to watch matches and celebrate – were so important in the marketing strategy of the LOC. This emerged at a presentation by the FIFA media and communications team, based in Zurich, Switzerland, and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. They presented to the media, host cities and marketing partners in Johannesburg last week at the first of many such media days.

    There’s power in apology
[Chris Moerdyk] The majority of companies and virtually all politicians without exception are still blissfully unaware of the fact that in this day and age of intuitive and cynical consumerism, there is a lot of power in a simple apology. Yet companies and politicians still find it almost impossible to admit that they might be wrong and continue to defend their turf and corporate reputations with mind-boggling naivety.

Business and the price of crime
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] A public discussion on how crime affects business took place earlier this week at the Birchwood Executive Hotel in Boksburg, on the East Rand. Jointly organised by SAfm and Business Day and themed ‘Crime has a Price: is Business Fitting the Bill?’, the debate could not have come at a better time – when both businesses and ordinary citizens in South Africa firmly believe that ‘enough is enough’.

Would the real innovators please stand up?
[Patrick Carmody] Traditional ad agencies often take the heat for their archaic brand solutions which fail to adapt to the modern ‘consumer/media/brand-scape’. On closer inspection it appears that it is the marketers who have the real catching up to do.

    Advertising
Just seeing ads isn’t good enough
[Chris Moerdyk] Something that a lot of advertisers and their media buyers forget when they’re planning where to place their marketing communications messages is to consider the state of mind of consumers at the moment they see the ad. The question that should, and is very rarely asked, is whether consumers will be commercially receptive at the moment of contact with an ad.
