The creative showcase that is the annual Design Indaba manages to wow audiences every year with speakers that challenge you as an individual, even if you’re not a designer. Future trends using nature and animals as inspiration and natural materials paled in comparison to the social responsibility thread that was woven throughout the week of inspiration. Wear your heart on your sleeve: all the schmaltz from Valentines Day might be over, but hearts are big – in jewellery, on clothing and in design… and designing with your heart is the only way to save the world, according to futurist and design activist Alex Steffan, who wants all creative people and designers to seriously tackle the redesign of the world to save our species and the many others we share this planet with. And if you’ve seen the phenomenal Al Gore movie, An Inconvenient Truth, you will know why. If you haven’t, make sure it’s at the top of your list of must-see movies. Designing with a conscience - in fact, living and working and playing with a conscience - and dumping products that have dubious origins or harm the environment is the way of now, as our future is already here and it ain’t looking so pretty inside. Here’s only one fact in the calamity that is being forecast by activists and scientists: we face having polar bears going extinct in our lifetimes… do any of us want that? Read more about what Steffan had to say below.

Let’s all try make a difference! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com

Imagine designing a whole new world...
[Louise Marsland]Imagine only buying and consuming products which you know are good for you, your family and the environment because you know their history? Imagine a world in which we as humans weren’t killing off other eco-systems on our planet in our quest for rampant consumerism? Activist talk or our future reality…?

    Design with solutions in mind
[Terry Levin]Having grown up among awful architecture in South London, Cameron Sinclair started the non-profit ‘Architects for Humanity’ when he was 24 years old. Transitional housing for Kosovo's Returning Refugees, HIV clinics in Lagos Nigeria, which incorporate movie theatres, organic farms and encourage input from communities to ensure the most effective solutions.

Design does not need to be trendy
[Terry Levin]A standing ovation before the first tea break at Design Indaba yesterday, Thursday, 22 February 2007, for Massimo and Lella Vignelli, New York-based design and life partners, was just one of the highlights of the day. Obsolescence is a social crime, challenges Vignelli, for although there would be no fashion industry without it, design does not need to be trendy.

Condom applicator takes first place at DI
It’s official - a condom applicator has just been selected as ‘the most beautiful object in South Africa’ by Jurgen Bey, a leading Dutch product designer and a speaker at this week’s Design Indaba Conference, 21 - 23 February 2007, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Roelf Mulder of …XYZ Design, a Cape Town product design consultancy, designed the applicator.

On the wings of a butterfly...
[Terry Levin]Thursday afternoon’s programme at the Design Indaba swept us into the heart of contemporary European design. Actually, one can think of few things more delightful than an afternoon in the company of four European designers at the peaks of their powers.

    Winning over the fans
[Louise Marsland]The three-way agency pitch, which has become an interesting feature of Design Indaba in recent years, this year focused on concepts for the 2010 Fan Fests – the officially sanctioned areas in our cities where fans will gather in their hundreds of thousands to watch the World Cup Soccer matches. The agencies were Enterprise IG, RSVP King James and Grid.

    Design for innovation
[Louise Marsland]Do you still know how to do the Vulcan hand salute? Remember the beehive hairdos from Captain Kirk’s Star Trek odyssey last century? How about the replicator which made you anything you wanted? Well, that might not be as farfetched as we think as Prof Neil Gershenfeld from the USA’s MIT explained in his 20 year roadmap for the future at Design Indaba yesterday, Thursday, 22 February 2007.

    Design is the new gold
[Terry Levin]The contingent of design devotees at the milestone 10th Design Indaba which opened at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town yesterday, Wednesday 21 February, is this year encouragingly made up of 56% business decision-makers, with approximately 20% of delegates from destinations as far afield as the Netherlands and Nigeria.

    Get it in writing
[Terry Levin]Freestyle illustrator Paul Davis, also from London, urged us to “hang out our dirty laundry on paper” and draw as this could be the only antidote to the fact that computers can do 73 billions calculations per second in binary terms and the possibility of the reduction of designers to “people going to meetings in Chinos”.

    Designing in hostile territory
[Louise Marsland]Do you talk about your ‘moron’ clients that you just can’t work with because they don’t understand design or your creative challenges particularly? ‘Designing in hostile territory’ was the focus of business design and competitiveness guru from Canada, Roger Martin’s presentation at the 10th annual South African creative showcase: Design Indaba in Cape Town this morning, Thursday, 22 February 2007. The fact is, designers scare clients.

Reddy to kick off 2010 fan fest
Nathan Reddy, CEO and founder of multi award-winning design agency Grid, has been invited to raise the debate on a national subject at the Design Indaba in Cape Town – the 2010 Fifa Football World Cup and the challenge of serving it up as an experience to all the fans as we welcome them from around the world to South Africa.

Loeries exhibition takes flight at Design Indaba
With the new Loeries season underway, activities kick off this year with the launch of the Travelling Exhibition, sponsored by the SABC, at the Design Indaba in Cape Town. The exhibition of the 2006 award-winning work showcases the very best of advertising, communication and design in South Africa.

    Advertising masterclass at Design Indaba
The SA creative index should ratchet up several notches this week when 20 top creative directors brainstorm ideas at an exclusive advertising masterclass. The workshop, part of Design Indaba, is presented in association with D&AD, a global design and advertising educational charity.

10th annual Design Indaba Expo gallery
The 10th annual Design Indaba conference (21 - 23 February 2007) and forth Design Indaba Expo (23 - 25 February) was opened officially on Thursday 22 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The expo is South Africa’s premier showcase of local design in all sectors, with the conference a creative talk shop of leading design trends and show and tell by some of the world’s leading designers. Marketing
    PEP delights customers overall
The results of the winners of the Ask Afrika National Customer Delight Index (Orange Index) were announced last week, revealing exceptional excellence in the food retail and petrochemical industries but a definite slump in the medical aid sector with regards to overall customer service. The overall winner of the survey was clothing retailer, PEP, which beat out well-known brands such as OUTsurance, Mercedes-Benz and Standard Bank.

Authenticity - the new fake or vice versa?
[Mike Abel]Having spent 21 years trying to understand brands, and consumers relationships with products, there are still some campaigns which get me wondering what makes people buy one product over another. And the luxury category has recently got me wondering exactly what we are aspiring to.

    Love and taxes
Using a humorous approach, Liberty Life’s current marketing campaign aims - with tongue firmly in cheek - to turn the word tax into something that’s loveable and fun. The idea behind the “Love the Taxman” campaign is to get people to question whether they have saved enough for retirement.

    Advertising - persuader or promoter?
[Chris Moerdyk]Just how persuasive is advertising? There are times when it appears to be massively persuasive and capable of making intelligent human beings behave in a way that is completely contrary to all logic. There are other times when it doesn’t seem to have much influence at all.

Grey’s Barnwell to judge at Cannes
Grey Worldwide SA executive creative director, Mike Barnwell, has been chosen as a judge in the radio category at the Cannes Lions 2007, one of the world’s leading advertising festivals.

Creative Circle Awards for January 2007
The Creative Circle Awards results for January 2007 are out and according to chairperson Brett Morris, newspaper and outdoor were strong, with not much separating the winners, but there were rather slim pickings in the other categories, aside from a standout winner in radio.

    Setting the Cape on fire
Saatchi & Saatchi have partnered with Volunteer Wildfire Services on an awareness campaign among Capetonians to be more careful when discarding their smouldering cigarette butts, especially during summer months when soaring temperatures and high winds turn the Cape pensinsula into a tinderbox.

LG Electronics has turned to the expertise of Lynne Mackenzie & Partners (LM&P) to design, build and install stands and concept areas that showcase a wide range of LG products in a modern high-tech setting within selected stores.

Billboard advertising - making them work for you - Brainstorm Projects
Print campaigns are often extended to include billboard advertising and it seems that in this lies one of the problems. Often the print advert is just blown up and pasted on a billboard with no thought given to whether it will convey the correct message. Billboards are a medium on their own and should be treated as such.

Bad advertising ain’t bad press - Globecreative Advertising and Design
[Matthys Ras]In Hollywood, it is believed that any press is good press. Any exposure is good exposure. As long as you’re talked and gossiped about... you’re in! You sell! But is this true in advertising?

Branding        Idea Engineers will grow your brand, reputation & business.

Beware of “We’re building our brand”
[Alan Radmall]Beware these four dangerous words. Spoken like a secret and holy chant that if challenged will send you directly to hell or worse. Often used by junior marketing people, ad agencies and uninformed company directors… The Holy Grail of Marketing that commands subservience and unquestionable loyalty from all who should be exposed to her.

    Art of building brand equity
[Terry Behan]The less experienced someone is in the field of branding, the more likely he or she is to hold a strong opinion on the subject at hand. No more so than when it comes to the topic of brand engagement: the art of building brand equity inside the organisation, where poorly conceived and executed campaigns are the equivalent of corporate kryptonite – able to reduce the once strong and powerful organisation to the reputational status of an Enron.

When viewed from a Brand South Africa perspective, however, the current crime media frenzy also offers important reputation management lessons for brand custodians.

    CRM
Customers – your most valuable asset
[Fraser Lamb]The customer is not only the single most important and valuable asset an organisation has - it is also the only asset that could appreciate in value. And yet customers are not included in the capital expenditure or ‘capex’ process applied by organisations. We allow this precious asset to slip through our fingers.
