I still get fascinated daily by what one can find on the Internet with a few clicks, more so than my cellphone (which I can blissfully remember doing without), I'd rather give up chocolate than my Internet access - and I am one of those journalists who remember starting on typewriters (and they weren't electric either in early newsrooms like The Citizen where I was a student!) Although someone asked the other day whether The Star newspaper still barred Internet access to its journalists except from one central point where you have to log in! Really? What a short-sighted travesty! Anyway the point of all this is that the Internet still gives me a wow moment every day and the latest find is a site called AlexaRadar - AlexaRadar's Fast Traffic is an automatically generated listing of websites getting rapid increase of daily reach in a given geographic area. It has a section devoted to the movers and shakers on the Internet, where one can see which websites are showing the most growth in each specific country. And we all gleefully noted that Bizcommunity.com features in the top five for South Africa: 1) Google.co.za; 2) MyBroadband.co.za; 3) Fin24.co.za; 4) Bizcommunity.com; and 5) za.net. According to the site, 72.6% of our growth comes from South Africa, 9% from the UK and 9% from the US... Big ups to the rest of Team Biz who make it happen daily!

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

    Africa leads in experiential marketing
[Richard Knight] NIGERIA: Experiential marketing is no longer a tail-end, rural, bottom-end purveyor of product information; it has become a leader in the total manifestation of the 'Brand' and all its dimensions in Africa. Having left the southern region with a fairly well-entrenched perception that South Africa was indeed the leader in Africa, it was a refreshing, albeit rude, awakening to the reality that Nigerians consider themselves and their country as the true continental champions.

Leaving boring behind in strategic presentations
"Creativity is not our job!" says Missing Link MD Richard Mulholland. Tell that to the client who visits Missing Link's Northriding offices in Johannesburg for the first time, only to discover that the reception area is a mock-up loo. Yup, that's right, to get into the office, you have to walk through a bathroom complete with toilet, urinal, basin and an empty loo roll. Not your bog standard presentation company.

[Simone Puterman] New campaigns that have been recently launched or have been running over the past few months include a feisty television ad for a new Joko tea variant, a festive season giveaway from baking range Moir's, an outdoor campaign for short term insurer Santam, and a 360 integrated approach for Microsoft's new gaming console.

The outcome is a turnkey solution that's different - it works.

    Who is responsible for creativity?
[Jason Knight] Our business gets tighter by the minute, clients' budgets shrink, brand options skyrocket and consumers' media options multiply faster than we can fathom. Somehow, in the face of all this adversity we, the crazy ones, have to not only reach consumers, but make a considerable impression. Yet creativity is not the sole domain of the creative department.

Half-baked - the Stork margarine blogging advert
[Mike Stopforth] Well done to Stork and the agency behind its new TV ad for picking up on a progressive trend - blogging - and attempting to reach a target demographic with it. But I must agree with a friend's sentiments that they have lost out on an enormous opportunity to capitalise on the significant Web buzz created by the first few screenings of the advert.

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder
"You don't have to spend heaps of money on conventional media to make a huge impact," says Hagan de Villiers, TEQUILA\South Africa's creative director and copywriter for the Toot-n-Scoot Scooter Taxi Service campaign. "It's no secret that people are consuming conventional media less and less - so you're more likely to make a connection with an experiential idea than with a big budget TV ad." This is the rationale behind the first Toot-n-Scoot campaign...

The gift of free media and speech - remembering Ruth First
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The tradition of independent, critical and socially-engaged journalism should be encouraged at all costs if Africa is to move out of its 'eternal darkness' and be healed from its 'chronic disease of underdevelopment'. It is in this spirit that the Ruth First Fellowship and Lecture, run in conjunction with Wits University Journalism Programme, was established in South Africa, and the fifth Ruth First Memorial Lecture and Exhibition was held last week.

    SABC under siege - again
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The SABC's attempt to silence the voices of reason, broadcast indecent and 'discriminatory' programmes and adverts, and crush the diversity of views and opinions - critical in the view of building a well-informed society - continues to be met with fierce resistance. This was demonstrated last week, Thursday 16 November 2006, when police used tear-gas to stop an estimated 300 angry protesters for coming inside the SABC premises, where they were to hand over a memorandum to group CEO Dali Mpofu.

SANEF protests at journalist forced to testify
The SA National Editors' Forum (SANEF) is protesting at the manner in which a Cape Town journalist is being pressured by a litigant and a High Court judge to give evidence related to his professional duties in a defamation action. According to a recent press statement, SANEF has stated on many occasions that the constitutional principles upholding the freedom of the media are placed in jeopardy when journalists are subpoenaed by the police or other litigants to give evidence when that evidence is readily available elsewhere.

    The NXT step with Caxton

Per word freelance payment system is ludicrous
[Chris Moerdyk] With the quality of editorial content in South African newspapers and magazines already playing a major role in the ultimate success, failure and sustainability of titles, it is time that print media proprietors had a fresh look at the ludicrously stupid way in which they pay freelance and contract contributors.

Uncertainty abounds in SA news media
[Chris Moerdyk] A lot of my friends and former colleagues in the news gathering business are decidedly edgy these days... Not just at Johncom, where they are waiting with ever-tightening sphincter muscles for their impending 'Moolmanisation', but in newsrooms around South Africa. It's trends, both home and abroad, that have their palms sweating and continued employment prospects not looking quite as secure as a year or so ago.

    Mobile
Is mobile taking the tier one media position?
[Harry Trisos] Every now and then pure coincidence plays a role in giving one a "wow" moment, providing an opportunity to re-assess and place knowledge in a new context. This occurred to me the day I read regular columnist Chris Moerdyk's "Uncertainty abounds in SA news media", followed shortly thereafter by an article on John Naughton's presentation to the Society of Editors Conference in the UK. It relates to young people and understanding why they simply do not use tier one media such as print, radio and television.

Amazing - cellphone TV actually works

Community, branding and the urge to join - Mobelity
[Harry Trisos] Steve Lightbody shuttled off this mortal coil five years ago. To many, he was a guru who blazed a trail across the firmaments of Corporate Identity, Design, Variable Data and the Internet. But to me, Steve's greatest talent was the way in which he was able to analyse and profile people, whether it was an individual whom he was going to take on in a business meeting, or a group to which he had to make a presentation.

    Online Media
    Gearing up for holiday season
Online retailer kalahari.net has launched various on-site initiatives that it believes will secure its share of the expected growth in local sales, which is forecast to mirror US sales. According to Jupiter Research, an 18% increase in US online sales is predicted for this holiday season over the same period last year.

Online SA consumers fuelling ad revenue growth
Online media consumption continues to surge as the Internet becomes an increasingly mainstream media platform and the current online media audience, while still a small proportion of the South African population, has accounted for strong growth in online ad revenue as advertisers increasingly find benefits. This is according to the latest research released by Nielsen/Netratings on behalf of the Online Publishers Association (OPA), which represents the major web publishers of SA.

The changing face of online media
Senior marketers are missing the point, according to Yoav Tchelet, a director at interactive agency iLogic. "I see it everyday, comments such as 'What is rich media?', 'What is web 2.0?', 'Online advertising?' and so on...," he says. "Traditional marketers need to wake up to the fact that if they do not embrace the Internet and other technology platforms such as mobile, then they will find themselves scrambling to get a piece of the 'action' very soon."

The sites - www.saautomart.co.za, www.buyandsell4x4.co.za and www.truckandtrailer.co.za - have been modelled on search engine Google and Craigslist, an online free listing service for classifieds. Complementing these is the recent launch of SA Automart for mobile phone users.
