Bizcommunity.com has introduced a new Noticeboard section on the website home page, www.bizcommunity.com, to assist readers and clients with those notices or appeals that fall strictly into the corporate social responsibility category or charitable sponsorship appeals. We get many of these and would like to assist those charities and those in need to reach this industry in so far as their appeals are legitimate. It's just another service from Bizcommunity.com in support of our business-to-business community. We are also allowing certain commercial notices, such as office rental notices - these will be charged for at a later date. Bizcommunity.com be at Markex Johannesburg next week, June 6 - 8, so please do pop by our stand and say hi. It was great meeting several hundreds of our readers last year and finding out how many of you have found your jobs on Biz, built your businesses through Biz and see us as your daily informative and fun fix. We look forward to seeing you again or meeting you for the first time! A huge thank you to Scan Display for our stunning stand and to the Markex organisers for inviting us on board.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, www.bizcommunity.com

    [Louise Marsland]

    [Louise Marsland]
The Federation of African Public Relations Associations (FAPRA) has called on all public relations practitioners on the continent to use their skills and expertise to assist in promoting a positive image of Africa to the world. A key resolution includes the establishment of a continental African broadcasting network to tell Africa's unique stories, by Africans, for Africa.

The 2010 Soccer World Cup is the greatest marketing opportunity that Africa has ever had and all communicators must get involved in aligning positive brand messages about South Africa and Africa, Yvonne Johnston, CEO of South Africa's International Marketing Council (IMC) told the annual Federation of African PR Associations (FAPRA) in Johannesburg yesterday, Tuesday 23 May 2006.

Has Netstar shot itself in the foot?
    [Chris Moerdyk]
One of the first blindingly obvious lessons in marketing is not to try and take advantage of a competitor's misfortune. Which is precisely the mistake Netstar has made in running full page newspaper ads crowing about how it can be trusted in the light of media reports last week that competitor Tracker had been accused of having staff members giving out confidential tracking device and customer information to car thieves.

Gauteng MEC for finance and economic development, Paul Mashatile, estimates that Gauteng will be home to 14 million people by 2014, creating a metropolitan environment the size of major international cities such as London - and economic growth should occur in tandem.

Agencies can't keep supplying staff to clients
    [Chris Moerdyk]
Clients need to stop the incessant poaching of advertising agency black staff. It has become so bad, I am surprised that so many agencies continue with their development programmes, knowing full well that all they are doing is funding their clients' human resources.

    Vodacom's position on subscriber registration
"It is highly unlikely that the registration of prepaid cellphone customers will bring down the crime rate as it is easy for criminals to get a SIM card from a neighbouring country, commit the crime and throw away the phone - without ever registering it," says Alan Knott-Craig, CEO, Vodacom Group, in response to the proposed new Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication Related Information Act (RICA). The Act requires cellphone operators to make facilities available to authorities for intercepting cellular communication to track down criminals more effectively.

    Spelling as important as selling
    [Riaan Grobler]
While many providers offer generic courses on a variety of communication-related topics, the real issue of using good, correct English is seldom addressed. This is ironic, considering that only 9% of the South African workforce speaks English as a first language. It is no wonder one finds uncertainty and a lack of knowledge of the basic rules of English among many employees, creating a huge gap in general communication skills.

    Car ads cluttering Tuesday nights
Tuesday is my TV night, and all my friends know not to call, interrupt, phone for a moan or even pop in. (Yes, I know I'm getting old.) What is your view?
