Laury, who heads the French arm of Kingfisher-owned Castorama, will assume her new position by early 2015, said a statement, as the British group announced also a drop in half-year net profits.

In France, Kingfisher owns also Brico Depot, while it is in talks to purchase Mr Bricolage as it looks to extend its strong presence in the country. In Britain, Kingfisher runs home-improvements chains B&Q and Screwfix.

"Kingfisher is a strong business, well positioned in the home improvement market and I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as group chief executive," Laury said in a statement issued by the British company.
