Uganda: Mission to address freedom of expression

WASHINGTON: Amid increased violence against journalists, the International Partnership Group for Uganda, a joint mission of seven regional and international non-governmental freedom of expression organisations, plans to travel to Kampala for a three-day freedom of expression mission from 20-24 September 2010.
Uganda: Mission to address freedom of expression

The joint mission aims to meet with journalists, human rights defenders, government officials and other civil society activists to convey their serious concerns regarding growing threats to freedom of expression in the lead up to presidential and parliamentary elections expected to be held early next year.

    Address heightened violence

The goals of the joint mission are to address the heightened violence against journalists, a proposed draft amendment to the press law that would place onerous licensing and registration restrictions on the printed press, and other critical freedom of expression issues.

Representatives are from Freedom House, African Center for Media Excellence, ARTICLE 19, The Committee to Protect Journalists, The Media Institute of Southern Africa and The Media Foundation for West Africa.
