    Celtel Tanzania has new MD

The former Chief Commercial Officer, Celtel Nigeria, Michael Foley, has been named the new Managing Director of Celtel Tanzania.

Noteworthy is that Celtel was launched in November 2001 and was the fifth entrant into the then highly competitive cellular market in Tanzania. Celtel is currently a leading mobile phone company in the country.

Confirming this development, the Public Relations Manager, Celtel Nigeria, Emmanuel Otokhine said that Foley takes over from Bashar Arafeh, who has been elevated to the post of Chief Operating Officer for Celtel East Africa Region, in-charge of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Madagascar.

A graduate of McGill University Canada, Foley, 47, has over 25 years experience in telecom and marketing. He joins Celtel Tanzania from Celtel Nigeria - the largest operation in the Celtel International Group - where he was the Chief Commercial Officer. Over the last 12 months, the Nigerian operation added over 5 million clients, increased 9 points of market share and regained the number 2 position in the market.

Foley started his career at Procter & Gamble in Canada. Over the years, he worked in various executive roles for New Brunswick Telephone, and Bell Canada. He also served as President of @Home Networks Canada (which was Canada's largest broadband service provider at the time).

In addition to the above, his telecom experience includes executive level assignments in the USA, Romania, Bulgaria, The Middle East and Tunisia. He has served on the board of a number of business and charitable organizations including, Excite Canada, Mobiltel Bulgaria and the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia where he was the principal patron.

"I am truly delighted to join and serve this great team of professionals. We remain committed to expanding what is already the most extensive network in the country and to making a deep and lasting positive contribution to the economic and social fabric of Tanzania," said Foley in a press statement from Celtel Nigeria.
