    Media Services Bill 'Under Process'

The process to formulate the Media Services Bill, which seeks to, among other measures, advance the right to access information, is presently being worked at the high levels of the government.

A statement issued by the Tanzania Information Services (Maelezo) in Dar es Salaam indicated that the proposed Bill will be tabled in the National Assembly any time from now. This is after it has been endorsed by the government.

"The government had way back in 2007 pledged to table the Bill in Parliament. The government is ready to receive views from stakeholders after it has been tabled in the House. This is aimed at improving it," the statement read in part.

The statement urged media stakeholders and Tanzanians in general to work together with the government to ensure that the process on the Bill is finalised and eventually the law that would ensure democracy and good governance. Meanwhile, plans are at an advanced stage for the formation of the national youth council.

According to the statement, the government convened workshops in 1998, 1999 and 2008 to get views from various stakeholders. Views from various stakeholders had been taken on board to reaffirm government's commitment in the matter. Tanzania will host the Commonwealth Youth Programme in Dar es Salaam next Tuesday.
