Enter the Entrepreneurship Recognition Awards

The Western Cape Entrepreneurship Recognition Awards 2019 (WCERA) is the second edition of a competition that recognises the achievements and potential of some of the Province’s most exciting entrepreneurs.

It is vital for an economy to develop a culture of entrepreneurship by facilitating access to markets that contributes to the establishment of new businesses and the creation of jobs and growth. Entrepreneurs create jobs, add economic value and opportunities in their respective industries; and act as role models who inspire others to follow their entrepreneurial ambitions.

Categories

There are six categories in the competition:

  • Emerging Business
  • A business in its initial growth phase operating in the Western Cape for 12 months or longer, but not longer than 36 months with a minimum annual turnover of R50,000.

  • Social Enterprise
  • Any revenue generating entity operating in the Western Cape for 12 months or longer, which aims to address a social challenge or need.

  • Most Innovative Business
  • Operating in the Western Cape for 12 months or longer. This refers to an innovative solution or approach to an existing service or product.

  • Woman-Owned Business
  • A 100% woman-owned business in its initial growth phase operating in the Western Cape for 12 months or longer – but not longer than 36 months - with a minimum annual turnover of R100,000.

  • Township Business
  • A township-based business in its initial growth phase operating in the Western Cape for 12 months or longer with a minimum turnover of R200,000.

  • Youth Owned Business
  • A youth-owned business (18 to 35 years old) in its initial growth phase operating in the Western Cape for 12 months or longer – but not longer than 36 months - with a minimum annual turnover of R100,000.

The winner of each category will be awarded R25,000 and the runner-up will receive R15,000

Criteria

To qualify, entrants must reside in the Western Cape and have:

  • a valid ID document if the entrant is a South African citizen
  • a valid business registration with CIPC
  • a valid tax clearance certificate
  • up to date financial statements, management accounts and a business bank account
  • a sound financial performance over the last year
  • leadership and management processes in place
  • a comprehensive business marketing strategy
  • non-SA citizens should supply their passport and proof of permanent residence and proof that you are permitted to run a business/work in South Africa

Entrepreneur of the Year Award

The winner of each category will also be eligible for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The overall winner will be judged on the ability of the business to sustain/create jobs and to increase its turn- over in the medium to long-term.

The closing date for entries is Friday, 30 August 2019 at 6pm and winners will be announced at an awards gala evening in November 2019.
