Bay must fork out for assessment of buses

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has to fork out R145,246 for condition assessments on the city's 25 Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) buses.

This is to ensure that the buses are in good working order before they go on the road when the system is finally launched.

The municipality had a repair and maintenance agreement with Volvo, which has since expired. Volvo has indicated that before it can reinstate its agreement, all the buses will have to undergo a condition assessment.

A report to the transport portfolio committee, which met on Tuesday, states that Volvo submitted a quotation amounting to R145,246, "about R5809 per bus", to conduct the assessments and issue certificates of fitness. The report states that Volvo was paid an initial lump sum of R9-million in 2010 for chassis and body maintenance.

According to the municipality, some of this money is still owed to the city, although it is unclear how much. It said the cost of any repairs or maintenance would be deducted from the money owed by Volvo.
