South African grain futures firmed on Tuesday (17 September) due to a weaker rand.

"The rand retreated from R9.81 against the dollar to R9.85 during the session which gave support to local grain prices‚" PSG commodities broker Wouter Bosch said.

The September white maize contract was up R12 at R2‚305 a ton‚ the December white maize contract added R13.80 to R2‚321.80 a ton‚ and the March 2014 white maize contract rose R13.20 to R2‚310.20 a ton.

September yellow maize firmed R5 at R2‚110 a ton‚ the December yellow maize contract edged up R7 to R2‚149 a ton and the March 2014 yellow maize contract climbed R13 to R2‚128 a ton.

September wheat closed R9 higher at R3‚364 per ton‚ December wheat added R10 to R3‚345 per ton while March 2014 wheat closed was flat at R3‚412 per ton.
