Food and beverage income up 6.4% in April

Total income generated by the food and beverage industry in South Africa increased in nominal terms (current prices) by 6.4% year-on-year (y/y) in April‚ data from Statistics South Africa shows.

A breakdown of the data showed that positive annual growth rates were recorded for "other" income (9.6%) and food sales (6.6%).

Total income increased by 4.6% in the three months ended April compared with the three months ended April last year. The main contributors to this increase were takeaway and fast-food outlets‚ and restaurants and coffee shops.

The food and beverages survey is a monthly survey covering a sample of tax-paying public and private enterprises involved in the preparation of meals and drinks for immediate consumption.

The purpose of the survey is to monitor trends in the food and beverage industry. The figures are also used in the analysis of comparative business and industry performance.
