Ngqura Container Terminal gets two new cranes
"The R150m investment shows the commitment that Transnet has in growing the economy of this region. Efforts are directed in creating capacity to cater for the market demand as the market trends show recovery," said Nosipho Damasane, acting chief executive of Transnet Port Terminals.
"This investment has been informed by the growing market demand and the continuous drive to satisfy client needs. These two new cranes have triggered the recruitment process of two additional gangs, resulting in 78 additional employees. This shows Transnet's commitment to job creation for the Eastern Cape region," said Siya Mhlaluka, terminal executive manager, Eastern Cape Terminals.
The additional cranes will increase the fleet of cranes at Ngqura from the current six to eight, which will improve the service offering to customers, as well as productivity. The target date for the full commissioning of the cranes is April 2012.
The cranes boast characteristics that include twin lift capability with an outreach of 19 containers across the vessel. This is likely to further improve current performance and thus the service offering to TPT customers.
