Cape Town's port operations resume after fire

IOL reports that cargo-handling operations have returned to normal after being disrupted by a blazing trawler at the Cape Town harbour over the weekend.

IOL quotes Transnet National Ports Authority as saying the blaze had been contained after a Chinese fishing vessel, Dongsan, had closed the terminal on Sunday morning.

According to Coen Birkenstock, spokesman for Transnet, cargo-handling operations resumed at 7pm on Sunday evening. Shipping companies lost two days because they were unable to offload cargo because of the blazing trawler.

According to the IOL report, Birkenstock said that all port operations were expected to return to normal by Tuesday. Five workers were treated for gas inhalation and tests were regularly conducted to monitor toxic gases such as ammonia while fire-fighters fought the blaze.
