Freight transport income on rise in May
Income from freight transportation for May increased by 21.2% compared with the corresponding period last year.
The volume of goods transported (payload) for May increased by 12.6% compared with the previous comparable period, the data showed.
The 13.9% increase in income from freight transportation for the three months ended May was driven largely by primary mining and quarrying products - contributing 29.0% and 8.7 percentage points. Manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products followed with the contribution of 10.1% and 1.5 percentage points.
The income from passenger transportation for the three months to May increased by 13.1% compared with the same period last year. Income from passenger transportation for May increased by 18.5% compared with May 2010.
The number of passengers for May increased by 40.6% on the year-on-year basis, mainly due to a substantial increase in the number of passengers transported by rail as a result of the transport strike that prevailed in May 2010.
The main contributor to the increase of 13.1% in income from passenger transportation for the three months to May was road passenger transportation at 17.4% and 13.2 percentage points.
