Transnet's efficiencies get Chamber of Mines' praise

Business Live reports that the Chamber of Mines has commended Transnet for its freight rail efficiencies, which resulted in improved transportation of commodities. As of July to October this year, the number of tons of coal delivered per month to Richards' Bay Coal Terminal by Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has been above six million, higher than the 5.6 million tons which were delivered in March.

Chamber chief executive Bheki Sibiya said similar improvements in freight rail transportation of commodities had been noted on the Sishen to Saldanha Bay railway line, for iron ore, and the Hot as Hell (north of Sishen) line to Port Elizabeth Bay, for manganese. "This commendable increase in the number of tons transported by Transnet Freight Rail to the various ports contributes significantly to the revenues accruing from exports through foreign exchange earnings into our economy," Sibiya told Business Live.

Sibiya added that the increased efficiencies would assist mining companies to put into operation their expressed commitment to initiatives that contributed to putting the interests of SA first. "This is a welcome contribution in these uncertain economic conditions when governments are under pressure to improve their economies," Sibiya said.
