Business Live reports that, according to Statistics South Africa (StatsSA), the income from freight transportation for the fourth quarter of 2011 increased by 16.8% compared with the fourth quarter of 2010.

The year-on-year increase of 16.8% in income from freight transportation for the fourth quarter of 2011 was driven largely by primary mining and quarrying products, followed by other freight, and manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products.

Income from freight transportation for December 2011 increased by 17.5% compared with December 2010, while income from passenger transportation for the fourth quarter of 2011 increased by 10.7% compared with the fourth quarter of 2010. The main contributor to the year-on-year 10.7% increase in income from passenger transportation for the fourth quarter of 2011 was road passenger transportation, followed by railway passenger transportation, according to Business Live.
