Volume of goods transported rises

The volume of goods transported throughout SA rose by 11.0% year on year (y/y) to 69.4 million tons, according to data published by Statistics SA (Stats SA) on yesterday. The increase in the first 11 months of 2011 was 7.2% y/y.

The rise in volume saw income from freight transportation jump by 18.1% y/y to R7.9bn. The income from freight transportation for the three months ended November 2011 increased by 18.1% y/y. The 18.1% y/y rise in income was driven largely by primary mining and quarrying products (33.3% y/y), followed by manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (11.3% y/y) and other freight (17.4% y/y).

The number of passengers transported by land rose by 7.4% y/y to 75 million. This produced a 10.6% y/y rise in income to R743m.

The income from passenger transportation for the three months ended November 2011 increased by 11.9% y/y, while the number of passengers increased by 7.3% over this period.

The main contributor to the 11.9% y/y rise in income from passenger transportation for the three months ended November 2011 was road passenger transportation (11.6%) and railway passenger transportation (13.0% y/y).
