Cape Town's sharks are an 'emotional issue'
Members of the pioneering programme Shark Spotters are part of Cape Town's frontline with the Great White sharks sharing its seas, iafrica.com reports.
South Africa records fewer attacks, but the fatality rate is still high. To counter some of the fears, an exclusion net is on the cards for Fish Hoek. Shark nets are controversial and were ruled out years ago, but officials state that the square-inch sized mesh technology is successfully used in Hong Kong and the Seychelles, says iafrica.com. Great Whites are protected in South Africa and listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN's) Red List of Threatened Species.
