Collective effort required for social change

For the second year running Chevron South Africa dedicated a 'Week of Caring' in tribute of Nelson Mandela
Collective effort required for social change

Addressing the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality are the focus of Government's radical socio-economic transformation. This is particularly challenging in a slow growth economy that is shedding jobs. According to Stats SA, unemployment is at 26.4% - the highest since 2013 when it hit 30%. When considering all factors, the present forecast for the economy is disheartening.

"Chevron South Africa, who trades under the Caltex brand in the country believes corporate social investment (CSI) remains a strategic necessity in order to help plug the socio-economic gaps in communities," says Suzanne Pullinger, Chevron South Africa spokesperson.

Leading up to Mandela Day on 18 July, approximately 500 Chevron South Africa employees will be taking part in Chevron South Africa's Week of Caring. This year the petroleum industry player will be supporting Stop Hunger Now, Friends of Child Protection, an organisation that supplies comfort packs to abused children, and the Amy Biehl Foundation of which Chevron South Africa has a long-standing partnership.

"Each day from 13 to 17 July staff will participate in a range of activities including packing and distributing meals and goodie bags, as well as spending time with children, as part of a robust employee volunteerism programme that cultivates a culture of social participation among staff members," says Pullinger.

Pullinger adds, "CSI is an essential avenue for corporates to channel resources together with Government, in order to address social needs, and create sustained change in South Africa."

Last year, in the region of 400 employees participated in Chevron South Africa's Week of Caring commemorating Nelson Mandela. Collaborating with various NGO's, Chevron South Africa employees helped pack more than 1000 meals, planted a vegetable garden and hosted a Mini-Olympics for children at the Amy Biehl Foundation, amongst other activities.

"In order to effectively address social necessities in South Africa, one needs to address the systemic issues that perpetuate the cycle of unemployment and poverty. All of us bear a responsibility to our nation. Chevron South Africa's community and government-aligned CSI strategy, focuses on health, economic development and a key focus on education, particularly Maths and Science, with the aim of achieving sustained change and transformation in the communities in which we operate," concludes Pullinger.
