Western Cape licence fees to rise 5,3%

Western Cape motorists have four weeks to object to a proposed 5.3% increase in licence registration fees, provincial transport authorities said on Monday (18 February).

"I have decided that, while it is not yet required by law, the proposed increase should be subject to a full public participation process," said transport MEC Robin Carlisle in a statement.

The draft regulations proposing the increase would be published on Monday (18 February), and the public would be allowed to comment on the proposal until March 18.

Carlisle said the province had the highest vehicle registration fees in the 2006/2007 financial year, but had frozen annual increases since then.

"As a result, our vehicle licence fees for sedans and light vehicles have come broadly into line with other provinces."

He said Western Cape motorists were getting good value for their licence fees.

He added that 93% of the roads used by motorists had been rated as good.

"This far exceeds the standards in the other eight provinces, many of whose surfaced roads are now virtually unusable," Carlisle said.
