Satawu: speed limit reduction "futile"

According to a statement from SA Transport & Allied Workers Union (Satawu), Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele's attempt to reduce the maximum speed limit was a "futile idea." "Making public statements out of emotions is not a way to address South Africa's road safety challenges," said the statement.

Speaking after visiting the KwaZulu-Natal scene of a minibus accident in which 10 people died, Ndebele announced that he will ask Cabinet to cut the maximum speed limit from 120km/h to 100km/h. He said studies showed that reducing speed in other countries - such as Australia - may have save lives.

Satawu argues that comparing South Africa with other countries and other road conditions only clouded the matter because SA road safety problems and transport issues are unique. "A localised solution is required, one that addresses our conditions, our work habits and our transport needs," the union said.
