Annual Road Safety Summit kicks off on 9 November

Earlier this year, the Automobile Association (AA) quoted the Road Traffic Management Corporation's (RTMC) statistics, saying that between January and December 2016, 14,071 people died on South African roads, a 9% increase on the 2015 figure of 12,944.

Intelligence Transfer Centre (ITC’s) 9th Annual Road Safety Summit takes place in Johannesburg from 8-9 November 2017, providing a platform for key decision makers including municipal managers, procurement executives, logistics and fleet management heads and other stakeholders in the transport industry to engage with traffic management and road safety personnel from all over South Africa.

Sponsor of the event, 3M, calls on all key and interested parties to participate in the summit, where their valuable input, feedback and recommendations will be compiled for the Department of Transport in the collective quest to raise the levels of road safety in South Africa.

Vusi Tshabangu, technical manager at 3M Transport and Safety Division, who will speak on the importance of road signage in improving road safety, says that the respondents who will attend show that this annual event has been welcomed by Government sectors and neighbouring states for its value to the safety of drivers, passengers and road workers. “Taking a scientific approach to road traffic safety in South Africa is an important driver of safer road use, and 3M works tirelessly to consistently improve road signage to ensure road users have fair warning of road and weather conditions.

  • Elmon Mokoni, manager: Road Traffic and Safety Sekhukhune District, Limpopo Department of Transport
  • Mojaki K Mojaki, deputy director road safety, Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport
  • Eckart Kruger, chairman technical committee: National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa)
  • Simphiwe Ntuli, director: Infrastructure and Safety, Joburg Transport 
  • Teererai Dzinotyiweyi, project manager: Centre for Anthropological Research (CfAR), University of Johannesburg

Graham Feest, a UK based road safety consultant and member of the UK’s Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety and serves on their Road User Behaviour Working Group, will facilitate a 90-minute workshop during the summit and share knowledge from one of the safest driving nations in the world.

Tshabangu urged stakeholders to attend the summit to share their experiences and knowledge and thereby increase road safety awareness and help find solutions.
