    Liefling soundtrack goes gold

The soundtrack of the Afrikaans musical film Liefling, Die Movie, currently on release, has already earned gold status having sold more than 22 000 units in the three weeks since the film's release.

"We are thrilled with these results," said Rex van Deventer of Coleske Artists, distributors of both the soundtrack and the DVD of Liefling, Die Movie in South Africa. "The Liefling soundtrack is the top seller at certain Look & Listen stores.

"It is the 13th best seller in the Afrikaans charts at CNA and the 8th best seller in the Afrikaans charts at Musica,." he added. The feature film has earned just short of R9million at the box office to date and it's been seen by more than 306 000 people countrywide.

Best performing Afrikaans language movie of all time

"That means that the film is now the best performing Afrikaans language movie of all time, 28 percent bigger than the previous record holder, Lipstiek Dipstiek," said Helen Kuun, CEO of Indigenous Film Distribution. Lipstiek Dipstiek earned R6.3mil. Recent Afrikaans teen comedy hit Bakgat 2 earned just over R5.3million when it released earlier this year and 177 000 tickets were sold. Liefling has sold 43 percent more tickets than Bakgat 2.

Liefling is a love story in the tradition of spectacular musicals featuring an all-star cast and music that includes the most well-known Afrikaans songs from the 70s to today. The film's success illustrates the appeal of local stars like Bobby van Jaarsveld, Kurt Darren, Lika Berning and Marlee van der Merwe, as well as perennial favourites like Sonja Herholdt, Carike Keuzenkamp and Paul du Toit. The soundtrack is currently available from Coleske Artists at all leading retail outlets.
