2017 in reviewWith the end of 2017 fast approaching, our #BestofBiz retail roundup reflects on the year that was with lists of the stories, contributors and press offices that garnered the most attention from you this year. Meanwhile, looking back at Black Friday, Jainita Khatri asks whether the increasingly popular shopping extravaganza was a win for SA retailers with a particular focus on Takealot and Superbalist. I report back on Brett Kaplan's insightful talk on the ' Apparel Retail Landscape' at the recent ATF Trade Exhibition held in Cape Town. Kaplan shared the challenges, but more importantly the opportunities, facing the sector. In other top news, the FairPlay anti-dumping movement has requested an enquiry into the unsafe labelling of chicken imports after discovering bulk packs of chicken for sale with a label claiming nine possible countries of origin. And Christo Wiese resigned as chairperson of Steinhoff's supervisory board in the midst of an accounting scandal that has left the retail group's reputation in tatters. On a lighter note, Burger Kings across the world got into the festive spirit by cheekily 'gifting' its main competitor, McDonald's, with gas braais to flame-grill their burgers. "Now, finally, McDonald's will be able to enjoy burgers the way we think they are supposed to be: flame-grilled," quipped Burger King. This is our last newsletter for 2017, but we'll be back in your inbox on 8 January 2018. We wish you and your loved ones a wonderful and safe festive season!
