It's awards season in Hollywood as proclaimed by the addictive E! Entertainment News and with the Loeries 2007 launch last week, our own awards season is about to get underway! When the Loeries burlesque spectacular moved to Margate in October 2005, it was always the intention to aim for the milder and warm winter season - ergo, no rain and grey skies. So diarise 27 - 30 July for Loeries this year - apparently it's warmer on the South Coast in winter than during the summer rainy season. Let's hope so: the freezing temperatures of last year's September 2006 Loeries put a bit of a dampener on things. Loeries are already hotting up with the new entry deadlines of 15 March. This is also the same day as the industry's newest awards, the all-Africa experiential marketing awards, Brandex, which take place after the newly-launched African Experiential Summit on 15 March in Johannesburg. Deadlines for Brand Ex have been extended to 16 February. Loeries has set new benchmarks each year since the revamp in awards professionalism and a tight expert awards event. This is being seen in the industry in most other major awards and events, which are tighter and more consultative than in the past, it seems, on deliverables and promoting the best interests of the broader media, marketing and advertising industry. It's going to be a fun year!

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com

The truth about the black consumer market
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The countdown on knowing the truth about the black consumer market has begun. Earlier this week, the SABC Radio Sales team under the leadership of its national trade marketing manager Kgaugelo Maphai, together with the Standard Bank marketing group, toured the township of Atteridgeville, some 13km west of Pretoria, on a one-day 'Truth Experience Tour'.

Virgin Money tackles airline loyalty programmes
South Africans who have opted to join an air miles programme linked to their credit card have to spend, on average, R215 000 over six years in order to qualify for a 'free' return flight between Johannesburg and Cape Town, or vice versa. This is the finding of recent research conducted by Virgin Money.

HIV/AIDS campaign from MTV, Body Shop
LONDON: MTV Networks International (MTVNI) and The Body Shop have launched what is claimed to be the biggest ever multimedia partnership between a global broadcaster and retailer for HIV and AIDS prevention. How to ensure your segmentations deliver every time - Knowledge Factory
Market segmentation exercises often disappoint the companies applying them. Despite remaining one of the most popular ways of devising marketing initiatives during the last forty years, the technique's record is one littered with campaigns that have failed to deliver meaningful results.

    Controversial insurance commercial banned

The Creative Circle Awards results for December 2006 are out and according to chairperson John Davenport, some of the work that month was "strong-ish" but not in all categories. Forget fashion and focus on the classics
[Steven Hall] Traditional film cinematography has been used for a number of years in the way that television commercials are shot, thereby helping deliver the marketing message in an artful and emotive way. With the current stream of animated television commercials riding the wave of what is fashionable (thanks, MTV), there appears to be little place for traditional cinematography in animated commercials.

Awareness in advertising is not the only factor that makes it work - Chris Moerdyk
One of the biggest dangers in marketing today is that far too much emphasis is being placed on "awareness". Even worse, awareness is seen by many advertisers to be the one and only yardstick in determining the success of failure of marketing communications.

Prize-winning kulula spoof ad forced into crash landing... - King James

Should Eskom feature in brand polls?
[Chris Moerdyk] Having been caught with its pants down two years in a row now, Eskom's status as one of South Africa's top ten brands must surely be under threat. It all depends upon how one measures brand integrity or the overall respect consumers across the board will have for it. And this measurement becomes all the more difficult when the brand one is attempting to measure has a complete monopoly in its sector.
