Judging by the traffic at 6.20am in a stormy Joburg, lashed by rain this Monday morning, everyone is back at work [sigh], so no more getting to work in under 12 minutes. The industry is off to a flying start with a slew of press releases for all the key events, conferences, awards coming up in the next few months. There're deadlines looming for the Mondi Newspaper and Journalism Awards, as well as the Citadel Money Journalism Awards - and quite a few new media announcements, the most significant and very interesting being a date for the launch of Maverick publisher, Branko Brkic's new magazine focusing on the media industry, to be called Empire (see below for more). Think Vanity Fair meets Fortune meets Vogue meets Mad magazine (for the irreverence of it) and you get some idea of the treatment the media industry can expect from Empire! Bizcommunity.com continues to expand, with another appointment to our sales team: Les van Dyk (ex-RSP) who has been appointed regional sales manager: Johannesburg and Durban. Les will be based at our offices in Rivonia and can be contacted on: +27 (0)11 612 3003.

All the best for the new year! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com

Banks cross 'the bad marketing line'
[Chris Moerdyk] It is nonsensical for the Reserve Bank or Government to chastise banks for heavily marketing credit cards even when they embark on such in-your-face direct marketing campaigns as South Africa witnessed in the second half of last year.

He expands on the ways that marketing will be transformed in the year to come, in his official blog.

    Moerdyk's wish list for 2007
[Chris Moerdyk] The most ardent wish for the whole media and marketing industry has got to be that Reserve Bank Governor, Tito Mboweni, does not go into overkill mode on his rate increases and stifle consumer spending altogether. And following hard on the heels of that wish is the hope that for the first time in history, advertisers will not knee-jerk their way into severe advertising and marketing budget cuts as they always do when they get even the slightest hint that consumers might be spending a little less.

Locally, Hansa Pilsener is at the forefront of this consumer revolution, with its recently staged Hansa Expression Sessions.

The rejection of PR in cyberspace
[Kami Watson Huyse] As I was writing this post, the Time Person of the Year was announced, and as you know by now, that person is YOU. It was an interesting choice, and I think that it is somewhat apropos to the discussion about which social media trends I thought were most notable in 2006.

How to get published on Bizcommunity and other tales...
One of the things the PR industry does so rarely is actually ask an editor or journalist what they need for their publication. This causes unnecessary miscommunication, bad feeling and the editor to break a nail hitting the delete button more times than is necessary! We decided to compile a rough guide on "Cultural Learnings of Bizcommunity.com for Make Benefit Glorious Industry of Public Relations" (with apologies to Borat and we promise, there's no hairy nude wrestling in this one!).

"In addition, the price of beef, which is determined by its availability, has dropped and is currently at the same level it was selling for in September 2006, testimony to the current surplus availability of beef. Retailers have been urged to adjust their pricing accordingly and pass the cost saving onto consumers," explains Ford.

This is the first time in five years that bidorbuy has invested in advertising. The peak shopping season also resulted in an increase of 21% in new registered users and almost 70% more product listings on bidorbuy.
