Season's Greetings!
Click for enlarged images with captions
This has been a year of sustained growth for Bizcommunity.com - our fifth year of operation since launching in 2001. We have welcomed nine new faces to the team this year: Robin, Simone, Gee, Kershin, David, Rob, Sindy, Clarina and Issa, across editorial, sales, IT, support and admin. It is important to note that in those five years, we have had only two resignations. The most significant appointment, of course, has been that of Robin Parker as MD to allow founding director, Andre Rademan, to focus on development. After a period of consolidating existing projects in Bizcommunity.com, Robin is driving existing expansion plans, as well as innovation and brand extensions within the company which will benefit the Bizcommunity.com brand and create greater value for all our subscribers and advertisers.

Our figures continue to climb month on month and we hit the 57 000 weekly subscriber mark last month (up 10 000 from this time last year), with 157 000 website readers (unique browsers) per month - up 23 000 - generating a figure of 2.2 million page impressions a month. Bizcommunity.com has readers in almost every country on the globe, with 10% of our traffic coming from international users - mainly from other English speaking countries, including India, Australasia, the UK and the US. The new year will bring a host of value-added additions to our existing offering as improvements in technology allow us to go further each year in delivering the best possible service to our readers and advertisers. Notable this year has been the launch of our Jobs SMS service for our enhanced jobs section.

Bizcommunity.com pays tribute to its passionate loyal staff and sends out a big thank you to our readers and advertisers who interact with us everyday - you spur us on to greater excellence (a talented member of our support team has penned an ode of farewell to 2006, see right!). Wishing everyone a very happy holiday, safe travelling, peace and prosperity, wherever you are.

...All the best! The Bizcommunity.com Team, www.bizcommunity.com

New marketing drive for Gauteng Film Commission
The Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) recently launched a new marketing campaign to promote the province as a production hub of choice. Under the slogan of "Big ideas, Perfect locations", the campaign seeks to reinforce the province as a mature international film centre: one where the creative ideas are as big as the mine dumps, and the weather and locations perfectly pitched, all year round.

Corporate execs are getting the Web PR clue
[Sally Falkow] Nearly half of senior executives surveyed recognise that reaching audiences only through traditional mass media is no longer effective. "The Changing Face of Marketing and Communications in Today's Creativity Economy", by Weber Shandwick and KRC Research, reveals that top corporate executives are finally getting the clue - half (49%) realise that using traditional media is no longer enough and 76% of senior executives are experimenting with "alternative" media (read Web PR).

    Online festive shopping trends
A recent Symantec Online Shopping Trends Survey has shown that during the weeks leading up to Christmas, more than half of the respondents would not be shopping or transacting online over this festive season. The survey also revealed the online habits of those consumers that use the Internet, as well as the reasons behind the seemingly slow uptake of the online opportunities within the digital environment.

Upgraded tool helps marketers move into the suburbs - Knowledge Factory

The tool combines the results of the SAARF All Media and Products Survey (AMPS) with geographical and marketing information from Knowledge Factory's other award-winning products to create a representation of the AMPS data at a suburb level.

To launch, or not to launch, that is the question - Knowledge Factory
The use of test marketing techniques to forecast a new product's potential is being increasingly scrutinised by marketers. Consistently high failure rates among new products worldwide and a string of extremely expensive, high-profile failures have stimulated the debate and made many brand managers wary.

Earlier this year, third-year AAA School of Advertising students were tasked with applying their newly acquired skills to extending the newly launched advertising campaign for Multibionta, a new class of supplement from Merck Pharmaceutical, as one of the three live campaigns they are required to work on during their final year - a taste of what's to come.

[Adrian Holmes] The simple graphic symbol, the box, is surely the inspiration for one of the most overused and most widespread advertising clichés of the last decade. "Let's," as everybody says from clients to account men to planners to creative people, "let's think out of the box."

The 'old ads interrupting movies' con
[Chris Moerdyk] Why is it that M-Net is still the only TV channel in the country that understands the marketing insanity of flogging advertising airtime during movies? Or is it because M-Net is the only honest operator in the business, while the others realise full well that the marketing value of an ad shown during a movie is pretty well zero, but continue to flog airtime anyway as long as there are clients and media planners naive enough to think they are getting some sort of value?

     Goodbye 2006...
    Shan Radcliffe

    'Tis a week before Christmas
    And all through the malls
    Everything looks festive
    Twinkling lights 'n glitter balls

    Santas hang from ceilings
Complete with reindeers and a sleigh
While shop windows advertise their specials
It seems like everything's on sale

Yet back at the production house
    Everything's winding down
If the telephone rings, a message clicks in:
    "Sorry, we're not around..."

    With the silly season's ads
    Catching airplay since September
There's not much to do now
    But look back and remember...

    There was SAMRA and EXSA
    An Indaba or two
    With the Markex expo
    Half the year through

    The ABCs are coming quarterly
    Much to magazine owners' delight
Though not all was peachy 'tween the teenies
As they got into a public fight

Men's weeklies are new in the magazine Zoo
But Krew had to pull out of the fray
Then Style went out of fashion
And Wegbreek made a clean Getaway

100 years of the Sunday Times
    Celebrations are in the bag
The Mercury is back on this planet
    And M&G got gagged

The RAMS show radio is on the up
With many changes on the air
Mark Gilman and Zee left 5fm
While Jeannie D brought Top Billing her flair

P4 became the Heart of Cape Town
    And Metro celebrated 20 years
Good Hope bared all for breast cancer
Here's to you ladies - cheers!

The TAMS are now released overnight
And more local shows are on the box
The Lab and One Way and Survivor SA
    The newest of the lot

'Twas a great year for SA filmmakers
    Gavin Hood and Tsotsi's crew
    Taking home the Academy's Oscar
There was one for Elalini, too

    Cellphones have been a-bleeping
    Bringing new services galore
    MobileTV, MXit and mobizines
And number portability coming to the fore

And who can forget the Virgin launch
    Getting people in a flurry?
Will Neotel be in next year,
Making Telkom drop costs in a hurry?

Broadband has become a new buzzword
Wireless Internet - the cutting edge
From iBurst to MWeb, Vodacom and MTN
3G's likely to put you on a ledge

And what of the Annual party?
That's the Loeries for those who forget
A circus tent atop a hill
And the rain making everything wet

    Still Margate beach was rocking
Nothing can get the industry down
Once the awards were won, the real fun begun
And red was painted the town

Of the winners, there are too many
To list them all here and now
Congrats to you all - you know who you are
Face the mirror and take a bow

So as the year draws to a close
    All the wrapping almost done
This last message goes to our loyal fans
    Happy holidays - everyone!
