    The power of customer evangelism

A few weeks back I wrote an article for The Citizen about things I wanted to do before I die. One of my goals was, and is, to drive an Aston Martin.

Let sport turn us into SA United - Lascaris
[Reg Lascaris] Optimising national spin-off from sporting events ultimately becomes a matter of wheeling and dealing. The challenge is to play as a team - and sport has to be one of the best mechanisms for getting us on the same page.

    The trouble with toothpaste
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa recently upheld a competitor complaint lodged by GlaxoSmithKline against Colgate toothpaste. The ASA found that Colgate's advertising did not sufficiently clarify that its "2x Better Cavity Protection" is only when compared to non-fluoride toothpaste. In an environment where most of Colgate's competitors contain fluoride, this claim may be misleading. Also, the disclaimer's font size was significantly less than that of the initial claim, nor did the disclaimer appear long enough for people to read easily.

ASA rules on driver's licence scam
In a recent ruling, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa partially ruled against a company offering 20-year international licences through street pole advertising. In essence, the complainant submitted that the ad is misleading as an international license is only valid for one year, and that the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) is the only authority that can issue these licences. Research determined that while the AA is not the only company allowed to issue them, in terms of the 1968 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic, "the international driving permit may only be valid for a period of no more than three years after the date of issue or the date of expiry of the domestic driving permit, whichever is earlier."
