| No Comment | The Brand Ex Awards launched last week as the first ever Pan-African awards programme to recognise and reward outstanding work in experiential marketing. The Brand Ex awards are an industry-led initiative by experiential branding and marketing companies that feel existing awards do not cater for their work or highlight return-on-investment for marketers as a criteria, which they feel should be a factor in awards. Bizcommunity.com is proud to be a media partner to the event to help ensure its success and will keep the market updated. We are involved because we have the most reach of any local media in SA in this industry in Africa. We're also making a call to readers in the industry to give us your "Lessons Learnt" for 2006. Every year we publish trends predictions and thought leadership opinion on what the year to come holds, but this year we would also like readers to email us with their most important lesson(s) learnt in 2006, from a business and industry perspective. Just one. Please put your first name, age and job title in - all other details will be kept anonymous. Please email me on editor@bizcommunity.com by the end of November. We look forward to your contributions, thank you!
Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

Then Business Day also queried where the offer to buy the 38% stake in M-Net and Supersport came from - Naspers or an external party - and what this means in terms of Johncom's long-awaited empowerment deal. Now Business Report writes that the Naspers offer "appeared to stem from Naspers' fear that control of Johncom would fall into unfriendly hands", and that this unbundling could lead to the unbundling of Johncom's 36% stake in Caxton, making it easier for a Caxton-led consortium to gain control of Johncom. Yet Prof Anton Harber, in his blog The Harbinger, doesn't believe a merger between Johncom and Caxton is on the cards - just a closer knit in working together.

Only the music Unlike conventional radio, new online music service WebRadio has no news, sports updates, weather or even presenters. "It's all about the music," says WebRadio MD Jeff Ellis. "People want to listen to music without interruptions and that's what we give them. Your music, the way you want it on your computer."
Got change for a million? 5FM, in association with Savanna, is giving away R999 995 to one lucky listener on New Year's Eve. The competition launched on Gareth Cliff's breakfast show the beginning of this week.

East Coast Radio and MTN develop powerful brand partnership - East Coast Radio
East Coast Radio's Platinum Slammer Package offers advertisers more than just radio by delivering an all-encompassing campaign that immerses the consumer in a total brand experience. Designed for maximum impact, this package offered MTN a powerful, connective strategy - with advertising on radio, web and a prominent billboard, as well as print ads, brand activation promotions, DJ endorsement and an SMS competition.
Toys for charity The Nigel Pierce TOY TOY feature kicked off towards the end of last week, with the show broadcasting live from a different company each day. The aim is to encourage employees from each company to bring toys (used or new, but not broken) into work on the day of the live outdoor broadcast or to donate money to go to charity. Toys and donations can be dropped off at the Good Hope FM offices at the SABC, in Sea Point.
702 completes historic move Talk Radio 702 officially moved to its new home on the FM frequency on Wednesday, 1 November 2006, when it launched its second, and biggest, FM transmitter in Pretoria at an outside broadcast and celebration at Church Square. The station is now available on 106.0 FM in the Pretoria area. This follows the initial migration to the FM band in July this year, when it began broadcasting on 92.7 FM in the Johannesburg area.

| | | Counting your chickens in Africa [Robin Parker] Research conferences by their very nature deal in detail. They are not exuberant by nature as many of us in the corporate world experienced during innumerable motivational days. But the participants in last week's Pan African Media Research Organisation's eighth conference, held in Cape Town, were no less than enthusiastic about their work in the difficult terrain of media research in Africa.
Robust outdoor media data soon [Vivian Warby] Data from the first outdoor advertising live survey using the Npod handheld research meters will be available for Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in late 2007 and the rest of the country in 2008 as the rollout continues nationwide. This will take media owners into a new era of buying and selling in this space, said Ken McArthur, MD of Nielsen Media Research SA. He was speaking at the eighth Pan African Media Research Organisation (Pamro) conference held in Cape Town last week.
From Prime Time to My Time: the future of media measurement - African Response Media measurement will never be the same, says Steve Garton, global head of media at Synovate. Why? Because the consumer is now in control. Speaking at From Prime Time to My Time, an event hosted by African Response, Garton addressed the key issues for media as we move into an increasingly digital world with an increasingly distracted audience.
| Retail | | Supply chain needs to reform or perish The state of the South African FMCG logistics system is setting retailers up as acquisition targets. Overseas multinational retailers or equity players are already considering buying choice retail businesses, adding value and selling them on. So if you just keep on operating as you did last year, someone is going to take you out. This was the stark warning to delegates at the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa/Effective Consumer Response conference running this week.
Getting to grips with wholesale/retail skills shortages While a disconcerting picture of slowing economic growth, decline in business with consequent job loss and increasing poverty is emerging from various Sector Skills Plans analyses, which stress the critical need to build the skills the nation needs to grow its economy, "the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) in conjunction with ECR and the Wholesale and Retail SETA has met the problem head-on," comments Russell Cagnacci, development manager of ECR South Africa.
