There were two major media events in Jozi last week that contained some very interesting information and stats. One was Terrapinn's Media and Broadcasting conference at the Sandton Convention Centre which addressed subjects not really featured before at a media conference: the convergence of technologies which make multimedia options for our media incredibly exciting, but also threaten the dinosaurs in our traditional media - who were (as usual) noticeably absent from cutting-edge events such as this one. See our senior media journalist Issa Sikiti da Silva's excellent report backs below. The other was Alchemy Publishing's release of its Madonna report with research conducted by Markinor into the needs, wants and fears of pregnant women and mothers of young children, as well as how radically their spending patterns change when they have children, how they consume information and what they plan to spend their money on - excellent stuff for marketers. Bizcommunity.com will carry the full report later this week, which was presented to marketers in Joburg, Cape Town and Durban over the last few days.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

    Why scientists struggle with strategy
[Sid Peimer] Henry Ford sold the Model T in 'Any colour you like as long as it's black', with the slogan 'It gets you there and it brings you back.' He sold 15 million. This was in a market devoid of choice - where marketing could be treated as science - price and sales marching in unison. In a competitive market, however, strategy follows the principles of design, not science.

The seven biggest mistakes in crisis communications
[John Bradfield] Corporate crises, which pose a major risk to corporate reputation, seem to be occurring at an ever-increasing rate. With the growth in crisis communications, it would seem that handling a crisis would be routine for most large companies. But this is often not the case. This article looks at some of the biggest mistakes in crisis communications.

Grapevine Communications has recently added Tiger Brands to its portfolio. The KOO brand has appointed Grapevine to launch new line extensions in the beans and salads markets to consumers and the trade.

    Internet a factor in counterfeiting
CALGARY: According to the 2006 Mid-Year Counterfeit & Piracy Intelligence Report just released by Gieschen Consultancy, over the first six months of 2006, a total value of US$699.3 million of counterfeit and pirated goods, specifically intellectual property theft, were discovered from 760 incidents in 69 countries. Major links to drugs, weapons and deaths were uncovered and a detailed analysis reveals the Internet is becoming a major factor in this illicit trade. Top brands counterfeited are also reported.

Take the Eastern approach to business, says Chopra
Western companies can learn more from an Eastern approach to business, according to Deepak Chopra, who says that corporate leaders should strive to encompass a "differentiated consciousness", which will hold the key to soulful leadership. On 15 November 2006, Chopra will be providing the tools to help leverage today's leadership deficit during a live all-day seminar entitled The Soul of Leadership in Johannesburg.

SA more likely to buy brands connected to good causes

The study explores consumer attitudes towards socially responsible business practice and corporate social investment (CSI).

    Media freedom fighter: Ferial Haffajee
In a column on iafrica.com, Branko Brkic, editor of Maverick, praises Mail & Guardian editor-in-chief Ferial Haffajee for her actions in the current SABC blacklist report debacle. "Audaciously obtaining the report and publishing the whole thing had already added to her (not inconsiderable to start with) stature as a well-connected investigative reporter," he writes.
