There are a few new words that have entered the informal business lexicon over the past few weeks, with choice appearances in headlines and newspaper copy as the media rattled SABC's closet until a few more skeletons appeared. The main target was SABC news chief Snuki Zikalala, who was the main culprit in the leaked report into the gagging of political commentators allegedly critical of Government. We rounded up the best ones and came up with a few more; the first word up is... Snukification [Snoookificaashun]: the wide scale gagging of individuals within an organisation. Known to span organisational structures to include political commentators and journalists. Snukified: those individuals who have been gagged and who only speak out at commissions of inquiry or from a script prepared by the SABC newsroom. Snukiology: The lesser-known journalism discipline on how to run a newsroom to ensure that global attention is focused on your methods, generating news headlines worldwide. Snukkered: When you manage to get your bosses to support you even when it feels as if the rest of the world is against you... (singular) 'To snukker'.... Snuk (not to be confused with the official dish of Cape Town, the Snoek, which goes well with slap chips and vinegar), this Snuk is a powerful creature, able to withstand many storms and even boards of directors. Use in a sentence as follows: "The Snuk made it through another day, wiping sweat from his brow, pleased to have seen off both the MD and the Board to keep his offices with its bay windows in his Ivory Tower for a little while longer." Snukums: loyal followers of the Snuk. [Postscript: This column was penned with a branded gift from the SABC to all guests recently at a function: a pen with the words 'TRUTH' inscribed on it...]

  • Marketing
The good old 12-point marketing checklist
[Chris Moerdyk] One of the craziest quirks of the marketing industry is that one of its most fundamental tools - the good old marketing mix - is the most abused, most misunderstood and most forgotten element in the marketing process. It's a bit like doctors having decided to change the Hippocratic Oath once a week and then leaving out the bits they don't particularly understand or want to get involved in.

Talking and listening... not to mention singing, dancing, and rapping - Dynamo Africa
With one of the best employee relations ratings in the country, it's no surprise that South African Breweries (SAB) is exploring new avenues to communicate with the people who make its business tick.

Why consumers don't mow their neighbours' lawn
[Sid Peimer] Why will we mow our own lawns to save R100, but never consider mowing a neighbour's to make R100? The effort's identical, and so is the money involved, but for some reason most people don't even consider it. The answer lies in how we frame it.

Sampling campaign reaches over a million
More than one million South African consumers have received a taste of the newly reformulated Coca-Cola light, thanks to a high visibility sampling campaign that has been running over the past few months. All of the re-launch activity is reportedly already showing positive results, indicating that South Africans prefer this new-look, better-taste Coca-Cola light.

    Channel loyalty versus channel partnering
[Gary Naidoo] Today's markets and businesses place a premium on customer loyalty, yet customer loyalty appears to be fleeting, only achievable through offering the lowest price or best margins to the channel. Yet still companies flock to the price and margin loyalty program bandwagon in attempts to win consumer loyalty, forgetting the value that lies in establishing long term true partnerships programs.

Baring all for Breast Cancer Awareness month
BBDO Cape Town has set tongues wagging with its campaign for the national Breast Cancer Awareness drive for October 2006. The creative team's idea for the "Touch Yourself" campaign required a degree of forthright nudity and needed some fairly brave women to get it started. The plucky radio personalities at Good Hope FM were the first to bare their breasts for the cause, and then the staff at BBDO Cape Town.

    ASA warns of Swiss scam
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa is advising the SA hospitality industry to be very careful of signing offers for free advertising. A Swiss company called Nova Channel appears to be scamming South Africa hotels and accommodation services with an offer to place a listing in their publication "free of charge". The company, which is well-known to the Swiss authorities and about which the ASA has already received two complaints, then charges for the ad and pursues the debt aggressively. The European Advertising Standards Authority also mention European City Guide and Construct Data Verlag as companies to look out for - click here for "EASA tips to avoid scams by direct mail".

Futurefin in breach of ASA ruling
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa's Advertising Industry Tribunal recently confirmed that Futurefin's advertising is in breach of previous ASA rulings. Standard Bank submitted that a claim substantially similar to the offending claim still appeared in the television and billboard advertising and that Futurefin was therefore in breach of the Directorate ruling and should be sanctioned. Futurefin advertises financing for luxury cars at low rates, but according to the ASA, fails to inform consumers of the relevant terms in a clear manner. The "catches" to the deal include a large deposit and residual payment.
