    New Media to publish estate agent title
    Custom publishers New Media Publishing has been awarded the contract to publish quarterly property and lifestyle estate agent magazine Sold!.     Woman GM for SABC Western Cape office

    Eagles deadline extended

    Naspers encouraging small investors through BEE deals
    The Mail & Guardian Online has reported that empowerment group Welkom Yizani is buying a 15% stake in Naspers subsidiary Media24 and Phuthuma Nathi a 15% stake in pay-TV operator MultiChoice SA, also owned by the media group, with potential benefits available to black business players and to stokvels and community trusts, as no single subscriber will be able to purchase more than 10% of the shares. "The site retains the feel of the magazine, but also creates an interactive digital experience of the brand in an online environment," says Prezence's project and marketing manager, Keisha Mayhew. The website is accompanied by the launch of seventeen editor Justine Stafford's blog, blogs.24.com/justine17.

    Online marketplace bidorbuy has recently introduced the 2 Hour Snap Auction, a special that occurs once a week on a Friday and only gives bidorbuy users a two-hour window in which to place a bid. The starting price is R1, with no reserve on goods and can include any type of item.

    City councils to lose out on 2010 ad revenue
    Outdoor advertising is the only method that directly benefits city councils countrywide because of the site rentals paid for the rights to the new advertising space. This, however, will not be the case in 2010, according to Willem Krog, MD of Ad Outpost.

    Hood to direct Hollywood film
    Gavin Hood, the Oscar-winning South African director of Tsotsi, will be directing a movie which may star Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon.     Hand in glove - PR and production
    The Production Box is a recently launched event production service aimed specifically at the PR industry. "Event logistics and production planning and execution are a labour intensive exercise, and as most PR agencies charge per hour, clients just don't get real value for money," says co-founder Trevor Harper, whose background is mostly large-scale theatre, event and music production. The other co-founder is Jacques van Rooyen, who has freelanced in corporate event, film and TV production.

    Good Hope FM has announced further changes to its line-up, effective since 1 October 2006. The new brand is a mellow, dry alcoholic apple drink with a 5.5% ABV. SAB currently has around 50% of the total FAD market in South Africa.

    Retsol purchases 50% of Chicken King
    Franchising group Retsol has acquired a 50% shareholding in Chicken King, which will see the group expand the chicken franchise across South Africa, with the opening of over 20 outlets per year for the next three to five years. According to Craig MacKenzie, director of Retsol, the "'young' brand... fits with Retsol's goals of acquiring a brand whose growth opportunities are not restricted to regional shopping centres."


    Online prepaid service transactions a winning recipe
    A combination of sophisticated server-based transaction switches and cheap, reliable wireless communication is creating lucrative new opportunities for South African retailers to sell prepaid airtime and electricity through vouchers generated at till points rather than traditional scratch cards. "The benefits of offering online prepaid products are huge," says Charles Smithers of Kwikpay, a provider of prepaid and value-added services to national chains and convenience stores.

    Checkers to sell Veritas winners
    Checkers has reached an agreement with the organisers of Veritas, the South African National Wine Show, that will allow the chain to offer to the public the widest selection of double gold and gold medal winners in this year's competition. The results are being announced tomorrow, Friday, 6 October 2006.

    The international travel retail channel has become an increasingly important source of revenue growth for Distell, at the same time helping to build brand visibility in key markets, says general manager of Distell's global duty-free division, Harry Loebenstein.

    DStv channels freshen up
    BBC Prime (channel 40) recently underwent a subtle transformation, entailing a cosmetic and tonal refreshing, rather than a re-positioning, in order to promote a stronger individual identity and help set it apart from competitors. Reality Channel (channel 42) has been re-branded as Zone Reality, due to international broadcaster Zone Vision Networks re-branding as Zone Media. Zone Reality's pay-off line "new name, new look, same great programming" sums up the primary changes.

    Comedian to host Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards
    Channel O has announced that comedian David Kau will host the Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards, to be held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand on Sunday, 15 October 2006. Kau will be assisted by the Channel O VJs who will be presenting the different awards in the 19 categories. Guest presenters include, among others, Big Brother Nigeria winner Katung, Melody Zulu, the Nokia Face of Africa finalist from KwaZulu-Natal, Pat Cash from Kaya FM and Lee Kasumba from YFM.

    First music chart show VJ finalists announced
    Following two days of gruelling auditions, MTV base, e.tv and Fanta have selected the first two finalists in their national MTV base World Chart Express VJ search. On Saturday, 30 September 2006, 20 year-old Fikile Moeti took the title in the first leg of the auditions held in Cape Town. She was joined on Sunday 1 October by 22 year-old Xylon van Eyck, who wowed the judges at the Port Elizabeth auditions. The music chart show premieres on e.tv and MTV base on 1 November.
