Bizcommunity.com believes in freedom of expression and the freedom of the press. To this end, while our message boards (comments under articles) and forum (debate) section allow anyone to post any comment under an article uncensored and in real time and invite response - similar to a blog - we do monitor all comments posted for defamation and just plain unnecessary rudeness designed to inflict harm on individuals or companies, or settle old scores. We've had to take action in the past to protect the integrity of our brand and again this past week. We will absolutely not allow the misuse of Bizcommunity.com's message boards for extremists to further their own political agendas and, even worse, issue death threats. As The Weekender, Business Day's fledgling weekend paper reported yesterday, globally acclaimed photographer Joao Silva has received death threats from American extremists upset over photographs he took of Shi'ite Muslims fighting US troops in Iraq. The photographs feature in a book called 'In the Company of God'. Some of these extreme views have been posted on Bizcommunity.com's website under a press release on the book. This is hate speech and we view it in a very serious light. We deleted the comments as soon as we became aware of them and no further blogging will be allowed on this debate. Bizcommunity.com also reserves its rights with regard to incidences like these.

Have a good week, Louise Marsland, editor, www.bizcommunity.com

702 still has vital "struggle" role to play
[Chris Moerdyk] It is a great day for 702 - finally being able to join the world of modern radio, something its competitors were able to do 40 years ago or more but which for all sorts of inexplicable and illogical reasons, has been denied the station that made talk radio the great institution that it is in South Africa today.

    702 goes FM
After 26 years of broadcasting on AM, Talk Radio 702 has finally moved to FM. As of 7am this morning, 24 July 2006, Johannesburg listeners can now pick up the station on 92.7 MHz. The second signal applied for, 106 MHz in Pretoria, will be operational later this year.

    Battle of the DJs
Motorola and 5FM drive-time DJs Gareth Cliff and DJ Fresh have joined forces to bring music-obsessed South Africans an interactive on-air promotion, MOTOPlay. This head-to-head challenge is a 'battle of the hits' as Cliff and Fresh rival each other for their choice of the latest and greatest music hit of the week. Listeners will make the ultimate decision via weekly SMS voting while making or breaking the credibility of their favourite jocks.

Radmark to publish guide to radio advertising
RadMark is launching a new quarterly pocket-size Radio Guide for advertisers and media planners, filled with bite-sized information about the medium. "Whether you are a junior media planner or a senior executive, it's important to get back to the basics and constantly be reminded of the latest innovative radio media solutions," states RadMark marketing manager, Norman Gibson.

Blanket campaign warms KZN - East Coast Radio
East Coast Radio's Winter Warmth campaign has come to an end with the station proudly announcing that 40 000 blankets were distributed over 11 weeks!

Radmark and Classic FM part ways
Classic FM and Radmark have mutually agreed not to renew their current advertising sales agreement. Says Sue Walker, managing director of Radmark, "We have enjoyed a good relationship with Classic FM over the years but the future strategy for the station requires a dedicated sales team". Mike Ford, managing director of Classic FM, concurs. Effective 1 October 2006, Classic FM will be represented by its own internal sales force.

Economic climate boosts FMCG spend - ACNielsen
With the exception of some short-term rand fluctuation, South Africa is certainly looking positive from an economic perspective. Interest rates have slowed down substantially over the past four years; inflation has dropped and annually the rand is looking strong. For the first time in years, we see consumer confidence being expressed by both black and white South Africans simultaneously, with GDP also continuing to grow.

Bagging it for breast health awareness month
For the third year running, the Pick 'n Pay group is supporting Breast Health Awareness month with its 2006 summer beach bag campaign. A portion of the proceeds generated by the sale of the bags is bound for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) in support of its continued breast cancer research.

    Retail ID cards combat crime
To counter more sophisticated criminal activity within the fast moving consumer goods (FCMG) industry, which is frequently seen as a soft target by criminal gangs, the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) is stepping up its high-tech introduction of ID cards. The implementation date will be 1 September 2006.

Retail innovation: lessons from US and a SA perspective
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] In future, the shop floor will become the market's principal battleground, as traditional mass media fail to deliver the required advertising effectiveness. This is the opinion of Steven Keith Platt, the Chicago-based director of the Platt Retail Institute, who delivered his last presentation on American retail to local marketers on 7 July, 2006 in Johannesburg, on behalf of Johnnic Communications' Newspapers Division and IBM.

The impact of innovation in retail business
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] According to a 2006 IBM Global Business Services (GBS) CEO Study, two out of three CEOs expect fundamental changes for their organisations over the next two years. Surprisingly, these CEOs do not seem daunted by impending challenge. Instead, they hope to seize the opportunity of these changes through innovation. This was revealed at the Retail Innovation Strategic Workshop held on 7 July 2006 by Johnnic Communications' Newspapers Division and IBM GBS.

    Sales
    Important selling-over-the-phone pointers
[Richard Mulvey] I was reading an old sales training book a few days ago, in which the writer made the comment that it is only polite to ask the person you are ringing if they have time to speak at the moment. This is a mistake. Please don't fall into this trap. When you are making a telephone call to encourage a prospect to buy your product or service, or even just to make an appointment, you walk a difficult line.
