It's just under nine weeks until the advertising industry's annual creative showcase, The Loerie Awards (I know, so soon already and I haven't decided what to wear yet either, doll!), and preparations in the seaside town of Margate are in full swing as the locals get ready to welcome back the industry. The town is getting a lick of paint according to local organisers and a public meeting is taking place in 10 days with local business owners to ramp up their support to the industry. The big news is that the entire weekend awards and aligned fun events will all take place around Margate's beachfront area on 16/17 September - so no buses and no hikes in high heels to get back from the venue this year! Loerie entries have just closed with 2800 entries received. This is 20% down on the previous year after the streamlining of the judging process which disallowed duplicate entries. Accommodation started filling up months ago, but there is still place, although you need to book your special cut-price Loerie flights on Kulula.com soon to avoid being disappointed. Go to www.theloerieawards.co.za for all booking info. Bizcommunity.com will be bringing you all your Loerie news and events over the coming weeks - look out for the judging appointments tomorrow.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, www.bizcommunity.com

Post-employment screening: a risk management tool
[Kirsten Halcrow] Any company would be very mistaken to think that screening and due diligence stops or is complete once a person has signed their contract of employment and started working, considering research shows that a high percentage of individuals who have held positions over a long period are implicated in serious fraud.

    Tshwane positive about 2010
Overall, there is a positive attitude towards the hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup and the perceived benefits to Tshwane and South Africa as a whole. This is among the key findings of a research project recently conducted by the Department of Tourism Management at the University of Pretoria.

Supply chain intelligence - supply chain management meets business intelligence
Whether it's FMCG, retail, resources, manufacturing or the financial services industry, supply chain management and business intelligence have been promoted for some time, but usually in isolation. Where they meet, companies can begin to realise real benefits from both by identifying opportunities to enhance business performance. That's the view of Accenture senior executive, Sean Katzen.

    Sponsorship
Octagon ventures into new retail territory - Octagon South Africa
Octagon, South Africa's foremost sponsorship marketing company, has been appointed by leading retailer, Ackermans to provide strategic sponsorship consulting, event management and media/PR services to Ackermans' key brands. Designers showing at the Durban and Cape Town Fashion Weeks are restricted from showing at the South African Fashion Week (SAFW). This year, in protest, a group of high-profile Cape Town designers will be ambushing the SAFW by holding their own show right opposite the Sandton Convention Centre, with their activities to be projected onto an adjacent building.

Sandton - the streetwalk of fashion
Maude Street in Sandton will be closed and converted into a high-fashion catwalk for the first time in order to show designer highlights of the Sanlam SA Fashion Week (SSAFW) on 30 July 2006. Peroni Nastro Azzurro, official beer of SSAFW, will present designers David Thale and Lunar, host the official after-parties and present Fashion in the Street at SSAFW later this month.

Independent commission of inquiry to interview SABC staff
As part of the SABC's process of investigating its policy on the use of independent political analysts, the independent commission of inquiry has set aside three days - 21, 22 and 24 July 2006 - to interview SABC officials and staff. Until this phase of the process has been completed, no further comment from the corporation will be made, according to the statement issued to the media.

    First HDTV African sports broadcast

    SA 2010 logo
I've just seen what is apparently the logo for WC 2010 in South Africa and frankly, I'm disappointed. What is your view?

    Marketing in the industrial arena
I find myself in the manufacturing arena. The ads in our industry are shocking, the PR is mostly soppy press releases, the information on marketing in this segment is so limited. What is your view?

    Ford rugby field?
Our population is 80% football crazy and only 20% rugby fanatics and yet Ford's latest TV ad targets the 20%? What is your view?
