With our monthly hits at well over 2.9 million a month, Bizcommunity.com counts international readers at well over 10% of our 161 000 unique users including 51 000 weekly subscribers to the ezine. It is indeed encouraging when our international readers write to share news and tell us how much they enjoy the content and news from the SA industry. I thought I'd share one particularly nice email I received last week from a reader in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the US, who writes: "From half the world away, I am very impressed with the content of Bizcommunity.com. Unlike so many other newsletters, I sense energy and enthusiasm in the content of every issue I read. The commentary and articles are particularly informative and enjoyable. I have to admit that I know very little about South Africa. Through your digital messenger, I am getting the impression that there are a considerable number of talented and creative people who make up a growing and dynamic community of progressive thinkers. This is just a little note to say - good job, and much continued success to you and everyone involved in producing such an impressive and steady flow of quality work." Kudos indeed for the Bizcommunity.com team and the industry at large down here on the southern-most tip of Africa!

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, www.bizcommunity.com

  • Marketing
    SABC revives 1970's paranoia
[Chris Moerdyk] It's quite sad really to see the SABC slipping back into a 1970's laager of illogical defensive paranoia about its news department. Particularly as this country is now a democracy with freedom of speech set indelibly into our constitution. Unlike in the bad old days of apartheid when speech was far from free and attacks on the SABC by the print media were seen as anti-South African communist propaganda.

Marketing chiefs more challenged than ever before
Marketers have never been more challenged and as the marketing function continues to take on a bigger role within organisations, the turnover of chief marketing officers (CMOs) has also increased. This is according to Chris van Melle Kamp, partner at the Johannesburg office of international executive search firm, Spencer Stuart, who also says that the CMO's agenda is far more complex than it was 10 years ago.

Virgin Mobile - serious competition or just marketing hype?
[Chris Moerdyk] When it comes to putting powerful PR behind the launch of new products and services, nobody does it better than Virgin's Richard Branson. And the launch this week of Virgin Mobile and the Virgin credit card were no exceptions to his flamboyant PR rule. But, what really got South Africa's attention was not necessarily Branson's dramatic entrances - bashing through walls atop 4x4s - but rather his comments on how consumers are being ripped off by our cellphone companies and banks.

    The future is invisible
[Dr Roger Sinclair] The wonderful world of forecasting... The truth is, nobody knows. It doesn't matter how bright you are or what are your qualifications. Everyone gets it wrong some of the time. If brands were regularly traded at Sotheby's or on the world's capital markets, there would be no need for complex valuation models. The market would set the price. But brands are not often bought or sold. When they are, they are frequently part of the package that goes with the corporate entity that was the target of the acquisition.

The impact of class mobility in SA
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Research conducted by FutureFact has shown that the euphoria and political loyalty that gripped the country in the years following the dawn of democracy seem to be waning. The focus has clearly shifted from politics to economics. Since then, the South African economy has been gradually stabilising and huge inroads have been made on the macro-economic side.

How to venture into the low income market
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Due to a myriad of preconceived judgments and other socio-political misconceptions, most marketers have often "omitted" the low income market or "bottom of the pyramid markets" in their business lists. But delegates attending the one-day conference, entitled 'Understanding the South African Consumer Markets and its Segments' held at GIBS last week, were told that the low income market is currently one of the most fascinating markets in the South African business scene.

    Understanding the youth
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As globalisation, technological advances and socio-economic pressures continue to challenge human existence and lifestyles, marketers are forced to redefine their strategies to sell their products, and to remain relevant in the societies they operate in. But while some segmentation models seem to be responding positively to new strategies, the youth market remains a tough nut to crack.

Best year yet for SA at Cannes
Africa may not have made much of a dent at the 2006 World Cup, but at Cannes, 'the World Cup of Advertising', it's a very different story and South Africa has had the best year in the history of the industry at Cannes in 2006, reports the Creative Circle.

    Ogilvy breaks records at Cannes
Ogilvy Johannesburg is celebrating a record-breaking performance at the 2006 Cannes International Advertising Festival, having achieved the best performance by a South African agency in the history of the ceremony. In addition, it outstripped its international sister companies as the top performing Ogilvy and WPP agency worldwide, and now leads on Creative Circle points.

    Grey Worldwide celebrates at Cannes
Grey Worldwide EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) celebrated their best ever success at Cannes this year, with eight Lions (two Silver and six Bronze). "It is a fantastic achievement," says Grey Worldwide executive creative director, Mike Barnwell, "and is testament to our ongoing creative renaissance." On the local front, the SA agency won a Bronze Lion in the Press category for Elliot Removals Shoes, Dog and Hat.

Are media agencies geared to handle online media?
Technology is changing the face of media. Today traditional platforms face increasing competition from an influx of innovative new media channels, such as Internet, SMS, blogs, email, podcasting, vlogs and Video on Demand. The July meeting of Advertising Media Association of South Africa (AMASA) will challenge the current approach to new media by asking: 'How do we best navigate this evolving multi-media landscape?'

First prize for SA at D&AD Global Student Awards
LONDON: "It's been the best year ever for the [D&AD Global Student Awards], with over 3000 entries from 36 countries," says Maeve O'Sullivan, D&AD media relations manager, and the good news is that a team of South African students from the Red and Yellow School have taken first prize in Poster Advertising and two teams each from the University of Pretoria and Greenside Design Centre have been selected to go 'in book'.

Died and gone to heaven? Not quite
Commissioned to launch Virgin Mobile in South Africa, morrisjones&co started off by asking, "What's the absolute worst thing that can happen when you sign a cellphone contract?" The answer? You're so locked in, you have to live out your contract, even if that means you've died and gone to heaven.

    Aigner parodies scam Loeries entries
"Every year, just before the organisers close entries to the Loerie Awards, a flurry of advertisers seek cheap media space to flight prospective award-winning campaigns and qualify for the rules. More often than not, the client's saving grace is a 2.30am spot on an irrelevant community radio station." This is according to Brad Aigner, MD of Universal McCann, who has released a parody on Bizcommunity.com for finding the cheapest available media to place these spurious entries.

Spoofing with a South African twist
Cape-based ad agency FoxP2's ad campaign for fashion brand Old Khaki is a parody of international fashion advertising. Says Justin Gomes of FoxP2, "The campaign isn't a spoof of any one brand in particular. It's a spoof of the fashion photography genre."

    Loeries travel to Grahamstown
This year, for the first time, The Loerie Awards Travelling Exhibition will participate in the National Arts Festival in a bid to highlight - and pay tribute to - the role actors, musicians and artists play in the country's advertising, communication and design industries. The Festival, which takes place in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape 29 June - 8 July 2006, is historically a palette of music, drama, comedy and satirical shows put on as part of the main programme, or as fringe and special events.

Bronze for NG Kids print creative at Cannes
Start-up advertising agency FoxP2 won a bronze Cannes Lion award for its advertising print campaign, "They don't have to learn the hard way", for National Geographic Kids magazine at the 53rd International Advertising Festival last week. Publishers 8 Ink Media are delighted with the achievement.

Lion for Saatchi & Saatchi SA
Saatchi & Saatchi SA brought home a Cannes Lions Bronze, one of only two awarded to SA in the hotly contested Film category at the 2006 Cannes Lions last week, for its commercials for Homestead, an NGO in Cape Town that helps get kids off the street and back into society.

    Entry deadline for Loeries extended
Take a deep breath, put your feet up for a moment and stop panicking, as you still have a couple of weeks to submit your entries for The Loerie Awards 2006 - the deadline has been extended to 12 July 2006.

The announcement of the implementation of the Auditing Profession Act in April 2006 resulted in the Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board (PAAB) being succeeded by the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA). Sold on Serengeti - Mortimer Harvey
The ongoing demand for exclusive, lifestyle estates is evidenced by Phase 1 and 11 of the prestigious Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate being completely sold out during the pre-launch period. Passionate about getting results for its clients, Mortimer Harvey embarked on an aggressive marketing campaign highlighting the pre-launch dates to interested parties who had signed up via the website.

In a bold move, today, Friday 30 June 2006, MWeb hijacked four of the Teazers billboards in the north of Johannesburg to promote its online parental control product, effectively covering the scantily-clad girls with a protective banner. The campaign was conceived by Ogilvy Cape Town, and is a simple add-on banner obscuring the billboard material.

Brand owners won't get their hands dirty
[Terry Behan] The bottom line is this - brand owners don't want to get their hands dirty. Managing the brand experience beyond the costly advertising remains largely undefined, ill managed and poorly controlled. And in my experience, there are very few companies that get it right.

So says Jabu Mabuza, CEO of Tsogo Sun Gaming, elaborating on the five-fold rationale behind Tsogo Sun's decision to reposition its corporate identity using agency Salamandra Design and PR.
