The Online Publishers Association (OPA) is certainly one of the most proactive industry organisations in our sector - holding regular seminars and briefings for members, ad agencies, media planners and the media to continue upskilling the industry and develop the online publishing industry while promoting growth and high standards. Speaking at the latest OPA seminar held last week, OPA chair, Russell Hanly, said while 2.5 million people were accessing the web on a regular basis in South Africa, increased broadband access was a huge catalyst for growth in other markets and a similar upswing is expected in South Africa. Growing OPA membership and researching how money is spent online in South Africa are the focus going forward. Visit www.opa.org.za for more info. On a sad note, our hearts go out to murdered editor Megan Herselman's family and media family at Drive Out magazine. Her senseless killing on the Rivonia offramp last week touched us all in this industry and Bizcommunity.com sends our condolences.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, www.bizcommunity.com

    Sponsorship
    The importance of leveraging sponsorships
This year, Imperial Car Rental celebrates 19 years of sponsoring the Comrades marathon. The easy part is writing out a sponsorship cheque, says Imperial MD Dawn Jones. The hard part is developing a new outreach strategy each year to increase the exposure. And in the increasingly costly world of sport sponsorships, a R1 million initial outlay could easily become R2 million in trying to maximise exposure.

"The big difference is the size of the crew and the flexibility of shooting because of the size. I mean, it's crazy. So you can't improvise, you cannot suddenly do something that comes to mind, whereas in a small production you have much more flexibility." - Bille August

"And that's why books are never going to die. It's impossible. It's the only time we really go into the mind of a stranger, and we find our common humanity doing this. So the book doesn't only belong to the writer, it belongs to the reader as well, and then together you make it what it is." - Paul Auster

"I don't really analyze my stuff when I write. I write about stuff that I'm interested in, that I'm feeling at that particular time. When I stand back and look at the complete work, I might see themes that run through the whole film, but I'm not really conscious of it when I'm doing it." - Spike Lee
