No one knows for sure what the media landscape will look like in a decade from now, although everyone has an opinion. While multi-media gurus have begun the debate on the rise of "citizen journalism" blurring the lines over traditional media news reporting (via blogs, vlogs - video logs, etc) - to say it's the end of all print media, particularly newspapers, makes no sense at all according to newspaper bosses and editors at the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) and World Editors Forum annual getogethers this year, in Moscow, Russia this time around. The newspaper is indispensable according to some, because of journalism - good journalism that guides readers, making choices for them. However, proponents of citizen journalism say consumers want to make their own choices. One of the biggest newspaper groups in the world, The Telegraph in the UK, believes that digital is the biggest step newspapers have had to take in the last 100 years. And it's a step directed by consumers who are now in control. Read more below from the WAN Moscow congress.

  • Marketing
The amazing secret of TV infomercials
[Chris Moerdyk] Listening to Verimark CEO Mike van Straaten talking on business radio the other night I was reminded of how quite often advertising works in a completely different way to that which one intended. Take all those direct response companies that advertise on TV for example. The Verimarks and Glomails of the world.

    Markex exhibitors showcase their flare
With its focus on the marketing, promotions and special events industries, Markex & World of Events 2006 attracted a high quality showgoer to the expo, pleasing most exhibitors who really have improved on stand designs compared to previous years.

Heather Third, the recently appointed business marketing officer for Microsoft South Africa, is focusing on aligning Microsoft's marketing strategy to the local market while driving the company's "people-ready" business vision. Third took on the leadership role in April 2006.

Entrepreneurs amongst 2006 Businesswoman of the Year Award finalists
"The skills required to be effective in the corporate world and those required to be an entrepreneur are vastly different and we will be acknowledging those attributes in the 2006 Awards." So says CEO of the Businesswoman's Association, Tina Thomson, with respect to the six finalists for the coveted 2006 Businesswoman of the Year Award, sponsored by Nedbank, which have just been announced.

    Are meetings really necessary?
[Richard Mulvey] Did you know that business men and women lose on average more than 60% of their business day to meetings? Do we really need to go to all of the meetings that we insist on calling each day? I wonder if you have ever asked that question. In my experience, meetings are "called" regularly and these "regular" meetings are notorious for losing their way and objective.

Become distinct, not extinct, says Tom Peters
Creativity in the workplace is of ever-growing importance to a country's economy as corporations and individuals strive to become "distinct or extinct". This is according to Tom Peters, one of the world's leading business strategists, who will be addressing the three-day business summit Global Leaders Africa, to be held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg, 20 - 22 June 2006.

Customer clubs growing more rapidly than consumer spend
Customer-club revenues from membership fees are growing at 15% per year and are now over R1.3 billion per year, mainly a result of a growth in membership numbers. This is the finding of the latest Customer Clubs in South Africa (CCiSA) 2006 survey, published by Razor's Edge Business Intelligence.

Peanuts, legal rottweillers and bad marketing
[Chris Moerdyk] Sometimes one has to wonder at the marketing short-sightedness of corporate pride. Particularly corporate pride that is dented by customers not paying small amounts of money. For example, a colleague in the PR business forwarded me a lawyer's letter sent out on behalf of the Health & Racquet Club to one of its clients who for some reason or other was not paying a R2 000 bill.

    Ormerod at home with Primedia

Conning the cons by faking the fakes
As DVD piracy continues to be a problem globally, the Anti-Piracy Foundation and TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg have found a new way to discourage the demand locally by becoming the 'pirates' themselves - they have created their own copies of South Africa's most-pirated DVD, Tsotsi, and are selling them on the streets, alongside their more notorious 'colleagues'.

    Advertising
    Flimsy flight prices
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa recently ruled that South African Airways (SAA) breached the Code of Advertising Practice by offering airfares without clarifying that additional taxes might double the price. The ruling comes in the wake of talks between the ASA and Association of South African Travel Agents (ASATA), aimed at regulating the clear advertising of prices for airfares and packages.

    What are you really downloading?
Confusion between once-off mobile content downloads and subscription services is resulting in South African consumers inadvertently signing up for subscription services, where they receive ongoing mobile content and are billed continuously, as opposed to once-off, as with premium rate SMS. Most do not know how to stop a subscription service or know what recourse is available to them for lodging complaints against a subscription service, says Dr Pieter Streicher, MD of BulkSMS.com.
