Keeping glued to our broadcast media for history-making court judgments is becoming quite common these days, which poses unique challenges to daily newspapers to entice their readers with novel ways to read them, when consumers can get the judgment firsthand. Beeld wowed its readers and those of us in the profession with its front page today which contained a 'mirror image' of a "Guilty vs Not-guilty" verdict. World-class innovation which is sure to win awards! Marketers also need to get innovative as strides in technology blur media lines between mainstream and digital media - well done to the organizers of the Khuza Awards Youth Branding conference held in Johannesburg last week for getting together one of the best media and digital speaker lineups at a conference in our industry in a long time.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, www.bizcommunity.com

    Future, thy name is Google
[Louise Marsland] The marketer needs to know how the techno-savvy new generation engages with the media they consume, in order to reach them with brand messages. This was the clear message from the Khuza Awards and Youth Branding conference held at The Zone @ Rosebank, Johannesburg, last week. Stonewall CEO Ben Wagner spoke on new media opportunities that brands have in reaching consumers and what the media of the future might look like.

Digital changes marketer's offerings to consumer
[Louise Marsland] Describing himself as a "retro-styled voice of reason" amongst all the 'anoraks' at the Khuza youth branding conference who were predicting the doom of traditional media, outgoing-CEO, SABC Commercial Enterprises, Mark Jakins, said in South Africa at least mainstream media are here to stay for the next decade or so.

Reaching the media savvy youth market
    [Louise Marsland]
Do you know how to reach the youth? Have you produced a campaign that has become part of youth culture? The Khuza Awards and youth branding conference taking place in Johannesburg this week has heard from youth experts who believe most marketers are missing the boat when it comes to reaching the wired generation.

    Best youth ad campaigns
The Khuza Awards, a research-based awards program where South African youth (aged eight - 22 years) vote for their favourite ads and marketing campaigns, have revealed that the South African youth's taste in advertising is truly colour blind and truly pro-South African. The awards were presented last night, Thursday 4 May 2006, in Johannesburg.

    Beefing up Jo'burg tourism marketing
As part of its mandate to proactively promote both business and leisure tourism to the central Johannesburg hub, the Johannesburg Tourism Company embarked upon an aggressive marketing campaign and is currently strengthening its marketing muscle. 2005 saw the appointment of marketing manager Hapiloe Sello and now, just six months later, Kabo Langa has joined the JTC team as the new marketing co-ordinator.

Consumer Protection Bill has ramifications for marketers
[Louise Marsland] Do you want to be told how to market and sell your products? Do you want to be dictated to on how you are to treat your customer and client? The new Consumer Protection Bill will contribute to the regulation of the marketplace according to marketing pundits and the Corporate Lawyers Association, who are calling on all marketers to make submissions to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on the new Bill.

The Consumer Protection Bill, 2006: for public comment
The new Marketing Association (in process of being established) and the Corporate Lawyers Association of South Africa have put together a summary of the Department of Trade and Industry new Consumer Protection Bill, 2006, which the DTI has given the industry until May 15 to offer comment on.

    Greater respect for road rules
On Friday, 5 May 2006, 915 learners from Gauteng's taxi industry received certificates in customer care, business and professional driving from the Minister of Transport, Jeff Radebe, at a special function in Johannesburg to mark their significant achievement. Upskilling the ad industry
    [Issa Sikiti da Silva]

How fair is Fair Value Measurement?
[Dr Roger Sinclair] If you look at the Barclays Bank plc annual financial statements just published, you will see an interesting item tucked away in the accounting notes. There, alone under its heading, but at the heart of a table about intangibles, is the value of the Absa brand. According to this it was bought in a business combination, which we know to have been worth over R30 billion. The value placed on the brand is £172 million (R1.8 billion).

    A change in zeitgeist
