No Comment | We know from our research that our readers are into the serious business of building businesses, of which we are extremely proud to assist with, by publishing key information, leads, case studies, best practice, etc. Last week, the draft Transformation Charter and Scorecard for the advertising, marketing and broader communications industry was presented to Government. It will now be ratified by all our relevant industry organisations over the next month and then we all have until 2008 to transform our organisations - whether they are SMME or SME or corporate, with all targets - set by our own industry - having to be met by 2014 in line with current Black Economic Empowerment policy. As media, marketers, advertisers, communicators, etc, we have an integral role to play in influencing society, therefore it makes it all the more important for this industry to be fully representative of that society. To aid our readers, Bizcommunity.com has put the entire draft BEE Scorecard and Transformation Charter on the website: www.bizcommunity.com. Just search the word transformation. Another great resource is the DTI website, which also has all the BEE Scorecard codes for cross referencing: www.dti.gov.za.
Have a good one! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@biz-community.com

Transforming the hearts and minds of SA [Louise Marsland] The approximately 4000 people employed in the marketing, advertising and broader communications industry influence and produce the images and messages sent to the 40 million plus population of South Africa - which is why the transformation of this industry sector is so critical to end stereotypical, racist, irrelevant and polarising messages that are sent out, even inadvertently, in our advertising and media on a daily basis. This sector has an influence on the hearts and minds of South Africa and it needs to fully represent the soul of the nation - as set out in the final draft of the BEE Scorecard (attached).
Industry BEE Scorecard presented to Minister [Louise Marsland] The advertising, marketing and broader communications industry, has until 2008 to get its house in order as far as meeting Government's transformation targets, and has until 2014 to be fully transformed in line with current Black Economic Empowerment policy. The draft Transformation Charter and Scorecard was presented to Minister in The Presidency, Dr Essop Pahad, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria today, Tuesday, 26 July 2005, by the Monitoring and Steering Committee for the Transformation of the Marketing and Advertising Industry.

Branding under fire [Naseem Javed] Pregnant mothers are being pooled to place ads on their round stomachs as part of 'tummy branding'. Some argue that this is how news is created. To others, this is desperate branding in action. Welcome to 'guaranteed-to-fail branding', a process that ensures a top spot on the list of branding failures. These projects are sometimes called reality branding and there is no limit to these weird processes.
mfsa postpones Marketing Excellence Awards The mfsa has decided to postpone its Marketing Excellence Awards, due to take place in September 2005, to June 2006."We have had a lot of push back from the market this week, prompted by our final call for entries on Monday. The feeling is that there is too much happening in the industry at the moment, with the Loeries Awards in October and the ACA's Apex Awards calling for final submissions in November," said Dee Blackie, Chair of the MFSA Executive Committee.
The information we know and the information that matters. Chalk and cheese? [Sid Peimer] When we meet the right person, we 'just know'. However, looking at the divorce rate, it seems we're correct about half the time. That's pretty good odds though, taking into account the complexity of human personality. The ability to find patterns based on very narrow slices of information is called thin slicing. And we can be remarkably good at it - if we know what to look for.
