This week we will be introducing the first of our new weekly columns. To put a different spin on traditional advertising crits, we are privileged to have secured the services of research and neuro-psychologist, Dr Kay Brügge, who will analyse, evaluate, and occasionally shred, all forms of advertising currently doing the rounds. He will be focusing on the subliminal integrity of the advertising message - both from the clients' and consumers' perspective. His pedigree is rooted in consumer and research psychology, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and a Phd in neuro-psychology. We're looking forward to the first of his columns, starting this Friday, as they are sure to be provocative and entertaining!

Have a good one! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

Expo creates a platform for connecting with kids
Marketers have a powerful platform to interact with young South African consumers at WIKID, a new youth-focused expo from 17-19 September 2004 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Crime in SA increases - SAARF
More people have become victims of violent and non-violent crime, according to the SA Advertising Research Foundation (SAARF), which released its All Media Products Survey (AMPS) 2004, this week.

    Misadventures in perceptual positioning
[Sid Peimer] A double adapter for connecting only two electrical appliances to a power source can cost as much as R20. That's expensive. The human brain, in contrast, allows billions of connections, with miniscule amounts of energy leaping from one neuron to another. That's cheap.

SAARF AMPS 2004 at a glance
AMPS 2004 data reveals that newspaper readership in total is stable, daily newspapers have an upwards trend, magazine readership is declining, television viewership shows no significant movement, cinema attendance is unchanged, outdoor continues its growth trend and Internet usage remains constant.

    New workshops for advertising professionals
Professionals within the advertising and marketing industries often lack the skills to fully meet the needs of their clients - and increasing operational pressures within agencies and client organisations, together with the need for empowerment, are exacerbating the problem, says John Cooney of the Red & Yellow School.

Labour law changes for child actors in TV ads
The Department of Labour has changed the basic conditions of the employment act for children engaged to work in television commercials. This comes into effect from 16 August 2004. Of the various changes, the most notable are the conditional working hours.

First TV ad in the vernacular for SAB
HerdBuoys McCann Erickson's new TV commercial for one of SA Breweries' oldest brands, Castle Milk Stout, is the first TV ad in the SAB stable to be created in the vernacular. Currently flighting on SABC 1 and 2, the ad is in Zulu with English sub-titles.

Saatchi & Saatchi to turn the world Orange
Following Saatchi & Saatchi Afrika's appointment in June as the Sub-Saharan advertising agency for global mobile phone network Orange, the award winning agency has also now been handed the responsibility for the rest of the African continent, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean Islands, the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic.

FCB launches two new products for Santam on back of new positioning - FCB Cape Town
FCB Cape Town has launched two new products for Santam at the same time as communicating a new positioning for the short-term insurance company. The new positioning - Santam provides peace of mind - is encapsulated in the pay-off line 'Rest Insured'.

No pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for these chicks
Rainbow Chicken, one of South Africa's leading providers of poultry products, is advertising for the first time on television with a quality 'fowl' campaign devised by FCB Durban.

Gone in 30 seconds... do TV ads still work?
[Gordon Patterson] According to a recent Newsweek article, changing technology and viewing habits are replacing the old TV spot with longer (and shorter) ad forms. The 30 second TV commercial is under siege in the United States, the heart of TV-land. Prime time ratings are down and viewers are increasingly inattentive when they do watch. A similar pattern is emerging in South Africa.

It's how you say it... - Enterprise IG
'I wandered lonely as a cloud'. 'I walked around by myself'... Yes, we all know how we say things (as well as what we say) has an important effect on the people we're trying to communicate with. Yet strangely, companies' use of language - the style, tone, vocabulary, phrasing and so on of their verbal and written texts - remains a neglected field when it comes to branding.

    Sales
    Differentiation in a commoditised environment
[Peter Gilbert] It is now a business truism that products and services are becoming commoditised more rapidly than ever before, and margins of most industrial businesses are under increasing pressure. Winning companies are however discovering that if you cannot differentiate yourself by what you sell, and you cannot differentiate yourself by how you sell, you will, by default, have to differentiate yourself by how much you sell it for.
