Mobile web usage in Egypt continues to rise

Mobile web usage in Egypt has continued on a surprising rise since its debut last month in the top countries for Opera Mini usage. The country displaces the UK and Poland in Opera's State of the Mobile Web report for the mobile web.

According to the report Egyptian users are still discovering their favourite mobile web destinations. The top 10 list for Egypt has seen many changes since last month, with a lot of sites moving up and down the rankings and two very famous sites (Wikipedia and Amazon) entering the list at positions 9 and 10, respectively.

Top 10 sites in Egypt (rated by the number of unique users):

    • Google.com
    • Facebook.com
    • Gamejump.com
    • Youtube.com (up from five last month)
    • My.opera.com (down from four last month)
    • Yahoo.com (up from eight last month)
    • bbc.co.uk (down from six last month)
    • Friendster.com (down from seven last month)
    • Wikipedia.org (new this month)
    • Amazon.com (new this month)

"We have never witnessed such an incredible surge in mobile Web usage from one country," says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "Egypt has made a resounding move to embrace the mobile web. Last month, they displaced Germany for mobile web usage. This month, the United Kingdom and Poland, two stalwarts for Opera Mini use, fall behind Egypt. It certainly appears the sky is the limit for the mobile web in Egypt."
