Cameroon: Editor dies in jail

A newspaper editor died at a jail in the Cameroonian capital Yaounde on Thursday, 22 April 2010, after reportedly being denied medical attention for a high blood pressure condition. Germain Ngota, the managing editor of the newspaper Cameroon Express, had been detained in March along with two reporters for alleged fraud and use of false documents.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said Ngota had been investigating corruption allegations involving a presidential adviser and the state-run oil company at the time of his arrest. CPJ is holding Cameroonian authorities responsible for Ngota's death after hearing from two local editors that his death certificate determined he died from a lack of medical attention in Kondengui prison. Cameroon's government has not commented on the case.
