    Botswana hospitality industry poised for growth

    The Botswana hospitality industry is one of the country's growth areas – and Compass Botswana has identified function catering and remote site catering as two further opportunities for growth.

    “In addition to function catering and remote site catering, we expect to see growth in areas such as outsourced catering, government tenders and facilities management opportunities,” says Michael Dark, Operations Manager.

    The company is a leading independent food service and integrated management organisation that has been operating successfully in the country for the past 16 years. The company, which is 40% owned by local shareholders who contribute regular strategic input and advice, has a good understanding of the local market and is committed to the economy and people of Botswana.

    “As part of parent company Compass Plc, we have invaluable access to vast resources and knowledge, which helps us develop innovative products and solutions that are suited to the Botswana environment,” says Dark.

    This expertise already bodes well for the Botswana company, as it currently holds 25% of the outsourced catering market, with major clients such as Botswana Accountancy College, Water Utilities Training School, Bank of Botswana and Gabarone Private Hospital. The company's work in the region was recognised in 2005 when it received the PMR Golden Arrow Award for the best executive caterers in Botswana.

    “We operate contracts across a broad spectrum of clients,” says Dark. “Our main focus is outsourced catering; however we do have a firm knowledge and understanding of facilities management. We service Botswana Accountancy College with a full facilities management contract, which includes cleaning, laundry, landscaping, staff feeding, front of house, maintenance, security and accommodation.”

    The company's says its unique strength is its understanding of the Botswana market, as well as its reliable and consistent delivery of product and service to customers.

    “Our customers are key stakeholders of our business, as are our employees,” says Dark, who goes on to explain that the majority of Compass Botswana employees have been recruited locally.

    Staff empowerment is integral to the business, with a mentorship program that includes biannual assessments of employee's progress. “Many of our employees have grown significantly since they have been in our employ, and some have enjoyed promotions from food service assistants to management positions,” explains Dark.

    Moving forward, the company plans to further entrench itself in the country's public by becoming actively involved in some of the HIV/AIDS awareness education programs.

    The group also plans to increase its current market share by expanding into areas outside of Gaborone, such as Francistown, Serowe and Mahalapye. A central kitchen, which will be used for functions and satellite delivery, is planned for Gaborone in the near future.
