115 graduate after intensive Transnet maritime training
The 115 trainees include three marine pilots to assume command of vessels in and out of South African ports and 21 masters to operate tugs or power boats. Other graduates include chief engineers, engineering technicians, engineers, master port operators, and operators of lifting equipment and straddle carriers.
All 115 completed their internationally recognised qualifications at Transnet's Maritime School of Excellence campuses at the old Durban airport site (main campus) and its satellite campuses in Richards Bay, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
Transnet says the graduating class - more than 90% of them black - are now employed in port operations throughout South Africa. Eight of the graduates are from the Namibian Port Authority.
Transnet has spent about R2.5bn in training over the last two years.
