Shackles stolen so bridge collapses

Times Live reports that the Elli Brown Viaduct - a pedestrian walkway over the Umgeni River in eThekwini - collapsed into the water below after thieves systematically removed stainless steel shackles used to keep it up.

According to the Times Live report, Carlos Esteves, deputy head of road systems at the council said that thieves had somehow managed to climb the bridge supports, unbolt the shackles and remove them. How long it took remains a mystery.
