VW increases vehicle sales in the first half of 2012

An increase of 8.9% in sales during the first half of 2012, when compared to the same period in 2011, gave the Volkswagen Group South Africa a 22.5 % market share in the South African total car market. The car manufacturer sold 47 531 vehicles from January to June with the Polo Vivo again the top selling brand in the passenger car market with 16 139 units.

"The performance of our three brands - Volkswagen Passenger, Audi and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles - in the first half of 2012 was very pleasing. The second half of year will be challenging but we remain positive to finish the year as the leading group in the South African passenger car market," said Mike Glendinning, director of sales and marketing at Volkswagen.

Internationally, Volkswagen delivered 4.45 million (4.09 million in 2011) vehicles between January and June 2012, a 8.9% increase compared to the same period in 2011. Christian Klingler, member of the board of management for sales said: "Vehicle deliveries developed very well in the first half of the year but that is by no means a cause for excitement. The economic situation, particularly in Western Europe remains tense and difficult."
