SA cars affected by recalls

Drivers of various older Japanese cars in SA may be subject to a recall to fix faulty airbags sourced from the same supplier‚ distributors confirmed last week.
SA cars affected by recalls

Up to 3.4m cars are being recalled internationally because of faulty airbags sourced from a single supplier.

Honda spokesman Joeline Dabrowski said that a "small number of Hondas in South Africa are affected by this recall.

"As a precautionary measure‚ 1‚047 owners of the Honda Civic made between 2001 and 2003 will be asked to bring their vehicles to Honda dealers for a free check. About 120 owners of the CR-V models made between 2002 and 2003 will be recalled as well," she said. .

She said owners would be contacted by letter‚ but that they are welcome to contact the company.

Nissan said in a release last week that just under 700 X-Trails and Patrols were affected by the fault as well.

Toyota spokesman Leo Kok said the recall would affect Corollas built between 2000 and 2004‚ but "seeing as it's a sub-component of a larger assembly imported from various suppliers‚ we have to run the VIN numbers to see how many cars are affected".

Kok said affected customers would be called by both head office and their nearest Toyota dealer.

He stressed the Toyota had experienced no reports of any trouble with the airbag and that the recall was "entirely precautionary".

Reports indicate the problem with the airbags‚ supplied by Takata‚ was related to the propellant used to inflate them.
